The best offline multiplayer game for iPhone or iPad depends on what you mean by “offline.” Some games let two or more people share one screen, while others need Bluetooth or a local Wi-Fi network to connect nearby devices. Both can work without internet, but they are not interchangeable—and an offline single-player mode does not prove that a game’s multiplayer works offline.
For the simplest travel setup, start with a shared-device game such as OLO, Tsuro, or a suitable party-game collection. For separate devices, consider DUAL! for two players or Spaceteam for a group, but test the exact app version and connection before you leave.
What “offline multiplayer” means on iPhone and iPad
Offline multiplayer can describe three different setups. Check which one a game supports before counting on it away from a connection:
- One-device play: Everyone uses one iPhone or iPad, either simultaneously on a shared screen or by passing the device between turns. No network is needed for the match itself.
- Local multiplayer: Players use nearby devices connected through Bluetooth, peer-to-peer Wi-Fi, or the same local Wi-Fi network. Internet access may not be required, but a wireless radio still is.
- Online multiplayer: Players connect through remote servers or online matchmaking. A solo mode that works offline does not make that multiplayer mode available offline.
A Wi-Fi network and an internet connection are different things: a router can connect devices on a local network without giving them access to the internet. Whether a particular game can use that setup depends on its current version and connection instructions. Do not assume every game supports an iPhone Personal Hotspot or that Bluetooth and Wi-Fi can substitute for one another.

Quick comparison: 15 games to consider
The table separates games by the kind of setup they are suited to. Player counts and connection details can vary by edition; where the available App Store information does not establish a technical requirement, it is marked “verify” rather than treated as confirmed. Check the current U.S. listing and test the installed version before relying on it.

Best games for one shared iPhone or iPad
A single-device game is usually the least fussy option when traveling: there is no local network to configure and no need to get several devices to discover one another. It is also the best fit when players do not each have a phone. On an iPhone, a crowded shared screen can be awkward; an iPad is more comfortable for board games and games designed for several people around one display.
2 Player Games: Offline Games
Choose this type of short-minigame collection when you want quick, direct competition without teaching a complicated ruleset. It is designed around two players sharing one device, making it a practical first try for a waiting room or short trip. Verify the exact app listing, and launch it before travel: a title that advertises offline games can still have ads, purchase prompts, or content that needs an initial download.

1 2 3 4 Player Games
This collection is a better fit for a family or small group sharing a large iPad screen. Its appeal is variety and short rounds, not a deep campaign. Confirm that the current app is the intended title, that its player count suits your group, and that advertisements do not disrupt the offline session.
Heads Up!
In this party game, one person holds the device while the others give clues, so the group does not need separate accounts or phones. It works best when the decks you plan to use are already available on the device. Download or unlock the needed decks while online, then test a round offline; deck availability, ads, and purchase prompts may differ.
King of Opera
King of Opera is a candidate for short, chaotic same-screen competition. Its simple premise suits a group that wants quick rounds rather than a long strategy game. The current App Store family collection lists it, but check the listing for the available edition, compatible iPhone or iPad models, player count, and controller support before treating any of those details as settled.
OLO
OLO offers a more measured, shuffleboard-like contest for two people sharing a screen. Its turn-based pace makes it easier to play casually than a frantic action game, and it is a good candidate for a short head-to-head match. Check the current listing for compatibility and price, and open the installed app offline before relying on it; its present maintenance and offline behavior are not established by the App Store collection alone.

Tsuro — The Game of the Path
The digital Tsuro is a useful option for board-game fans who want to take turns on one device, especially on an iPad. It is not the same as bringing the physical board game: player limits and offline availability depend on the app edition. Confirm those details in the current listing rather than assuming the tabletop rules or player count transfer exactly.
MONOPOLY
A digital MONOPOLY can make pass-and-play familiar to people who do not usually play video games. The name covers different apps and business models, though: identify the actual board-game app and its offline mode. Do not substitute MONOPOLY GO!, an online-first product with a different experience, for a local pass-and-play board game.
Keep Talking & Nobody Explodes
This communication puzzle needs one person to operate the game and another to consult the bomb-defusal manual. The second person does not necessarily need a second copy of the game, but the manual must be available to them. Check that the relevant manual can be accessed offline and that the current iPhone or iPad version supports the setup you plan to use.
Best games for nearby devices
Multi-device local games keep each player’s controls and information on their own screen, but they add setup dependencies. Everyone may need the same compatible app version, the correct Bluetooth or Wi-Fi permissions, and a shared local connection. The App Store listing is not always enough to establish which connection a particular current build uses.

Spaceteam
Spaceteam is built around cooperative chaos: players receive urgent instructions and must coordinate across their control panels. Apple’s listing specifies 2–8 players and says each player needs a mobile device; it lists the app as free with in-app purchases. Those facts make it a strong group-play candidate, but do not assume a particular radio or network method from the player count. Check the current instructions in the App Store listing and test it without internet. Do not infer that its Apple TV edition will work with every iOS version; the listing warns that the Apple TV version is incompatible with iOS version 2.0 and higher.
DUAL!
DUAL! is aimed at two people playing on separate nearby phones, making it a natural choice for a one-on-one duel. Its local-play design is more relevant here than an online leaderboard or matchmaking feature would be. Verify whether the current build uses Bluetooth, local Wi-Fi, or both, and whether both players need the same platform or app version.
Family Style: Co-op Kitchen
Family Style: Co-op Kitchen divides a cooperative cooking task across multiple screens, so it is a better group activity than a pass-and-play game. Before choosing it for a flight or remote location, check the current player limit, how devices join, and whether an account or internet connection is needed to start a local session.
Minecraft
Minecraft is the long-session pick for players who want to build or survive together rather than play a sequence of short rounds. Local multiplayer may be possible on a compatible local network without internet, but edition, world settings, account services, and device compatibility can affect whether players can join. Realms, remote servers, marketplace features, and other online services are not the same as joining a nearby local world; do not assume those services work offline.

BADLAND
BADLAND offers more substantial physics-based action than a typical minigame collection, but the name is not specific enough to promise a multiplayer setup. The original game, BADLAND 2, BADLAND Party, and Apple Arcade variants can differ in modes and access. Check the exact app you intend to install for local player count, whether play is shared-screen or multi-device, and controller support.
Crossy Road and Crossy Road Castle
These are different recommendations, not alternate names for the same multiplayer game. The original Crossy Road is associated with short arcade play, while Crossy Road Castle is promoted in Apple Arcade as a cooperative platform game. Check each app’s current listing for its local mode, number of players, and required devices; do not assume a multiplayer feature in one transfers to the other.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Apple Arcade: access is not the same as offline multiplayer
Crossy Road Castle is promoted as a co-op platform game in the Apple Arcade catalog. Arcade can be convenient for households that want a catalog rather than separate purchases, but membership, download availability, and the ability to launch a particular game offline are separate questions from whether its multiplayer works without internet. Test the actual title and connection method before a trip.
Apple’s June 2026 Arcade announcement says a family can share access with up to six people and describes new catalog additions. It does not establish that every Arcade game’s multiplayer or entitlement checks work without internet. See Apple’s June 2026 Arcade update for the announcement, and confirm your subscription remains active before relying on a downloaded title.
How to prepare games for a trip without internet
- Download while connected. Install the game and any required updates before leaving. App Store listings and Apple’s iPad download guide are the place to confirm the app and compatible device.
- Open each game once. Complete its tutorial, initial setup, and any content or deck downloads. This can reveal a sign-in or download requirement before it becomes a problem.
- Test the real group setup. Use the same number of devices and players you expect to have. For local multiplayer, test with the needed Wi-Fi or Bluetooth enabled but internet unavailable.
- Try Airplane Mode as a test, not a guarantee. Enable Airplane Mode, then re-enable Bluetooth or Wi-Fi if the game needs it. Airplane Mode can disable radios, but local play may require turning one back on.
- Keep the setup intact. Avoid deleting the app or signing out before the trip. For Arcade titles, confirm the subscription is active and the downloaded game launches without a connection.
- Plan for power. Several devices maintaining Wi-Fi or Bluetooth during a long session can run down batteries; bring charging equipment suited to your devices.
Troubleshooting when nearby devices cannot connect
- Confirm the game mode. Make sure you selected local or nearby play, not online matchmaking or a solo mode.
- Check radios and permissions. Turn on whichever connection the game calls for, and review its Bluetooth or local-network access if discovery fails.
- Put devices on the same local network. If the game uses Wi-Fi, verify that every device joined the same network. A network without internet may be sufficient for some games, but not all.
- Match app versions. Install the same current version on each device where possible; an outdated player app can prevent joining.
- Look for a host requirement. Some games require one player to start a session before others join. Follow the app’s own instructions rather than assuming all devices initiate equally.
- Separate local play from account checks. If a game fails at launch or asks for authentication, its local match may still depend on an online startup or entitlement check. Test that behavior before relying on it.
Which game should you choose?
- Only one device: Try 2 Player Games or OLO for two people, or 1 2 3 4 Player Games for a group around an iPad. Choose Tsuro for a board-game pace, after confirming the current edition.
- Two people with two phones: Start with DUAL!, after checking how the installed version connects.
- A group of three to eight: Consider Spaceteam; it requires a mobile device for each player.
- A long creative session: Choose Minecraft if you can provide a compatible local network and have verified that the intended world can be joined offline.
- Cooperative family play: Look at Family Style or Crossy Road Castle, but confirm the device setup and connection requirements for the current version.
- Avoiding ads or purchase prompts: Check the game’s current monetization before installing; a free download can still include ads or in-app purchases. Arcade may be an option if a relevant title is included, but it involves a subscription.
What to check when players have different devices
Before picking a game for a mixed group, compare more than the device names. Check that each iPhone or iPad can install the same game edition and a compatible app version. A standalone paid title and an Arcade “+” edition may not share modes or access terms. Older devices or operating systems may have different compatibility, and controller support—where offered—can vary by game and edition. If a game uses a host, decide which device will host and test that arrangement. The current App Store listing is the practical place to check compatibility and edition details; Apple’s iPad download guide explains where to find and download games.
Players using Android alongside iPhone or iPad should not assume offline cross-platform play. The available listings here do not establish which of these games supports a mixed-platform local session, so confirm that exact setup in the current game instructions before relying on it.
