Start with your Xbox model, then fix the TV and HDR settings: use Game Mode, set the console to the display’s correct output, calibrate HDR, and compare Game HDR with Cinematic HDR and SDR. These steps can improve contrast, color and perceived clarity, but they cannot add detail or unlock a new frame-rate mode. For the sharpest Xbox version, use Xbox Series X or Xbox One X.
First, identify your Xbox
Red Dead Redemption 2 is an Xbox One game with an Xbox One X Enhanced designation. The Xbox Store lists it as compatible with Xbox Series X|S and as supporting 4K Ultra HD and HDR10; those labels do not promise a dedicated Series X|S graphics patch or a fixed native rendering resolution. Xbox Store listing
| Console | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Xbox Series X | Runs the backward-compatible Xbox One X Enhanced version; the best Xbox option for this game, but not a separate current-generation remaster. |
| Xbox One X | Gets the Xbox One X Enhanced version and is the strongest Xbox One option for image quality. |
| Xbox Series S | Does not use the Xbox One X enhancement profile in the same way as Series X; players commonly report a softer, lower-resolution image. Rockstar has not published an official internal-resolution figure for Series S. |
| Xbox One S or original Xbox One | Produces a softer image than Xbox One X. TV settings can improve presentation but cannot provide the One X enhancement. |
Microsoft Community discussion describes the Series S softness and difference from Xbox One X enhancement, but it is not an official Rockstar specification: Microsoft Community discussion.
Check whether the problem is blur or HDR
If the image looks soft
- Check the console first: Series S and Xbox One S cannot be made equivalent to Series X or One X through picture settings.
- Try the TV’s Game Mode and disable motion smoothing, which can add trails or artifacts during camera movement.
- Turn noise reduction off or low and set sharpness near the TV’s neutral point. Excessive sharpness creates edge halos, not real detail.
- Disable overscan using the TV’s Screen Fit, Just Scan, or equivalent setting so the whole image is shown without unnecessary cropping or scaling.
- Consider viewing distance and screen size. Softness is more noticeable on a large 4K screen viewed close up.
- Remember that a 30-fps presentation can look less clear during movement than a 60-fps game, even when a still image looks sharp. LG’s Xbox troubleshooting guidance describes RDR2 as a 30-fps console game: LG TV Xbox picture-quality guidance.
If the image looks washed out, grey or too dark
Look at HDR setup, TV black level, HDMI input capability and the TV’s separate HDR picture mode. A mismatch between Xbox output range and TV black-level setting can flatten blacks or crush shadow detail. HDR calibration can correct tone and contrast; it cannot add detail that the game did not render.

Set the Xbox display output correctly
- Open Settings → General → TV & display options.
- Check the display information/capabilities section to see what the TV and connection report. Xbox menu wording may vary slightly by system software and language.
- Use Auto-detect and choose 4K UHD if the console, TV input and any receiver or soundbar genuinely support it.
- With the TV already configured for HDR, open the Xbox HDR calibration tool and complete all three screens carefully.
- Restart the game after changing output or HDR settings, then compare the image in the same scene.
Xbox Series X|S can support features such as HDR, 120 Hz, ALLM and VRR when the TV and connection support them; that does not mean RDR2 activates every capability. Xbox display capability guidance.
Do not force 1080p expecting more game detail. Console output resolution is the signal sent to the TV; internal rendering resolution is the resolution the game creates before output and scaling. Changing output can change which device does the scaling, so 1080p is a reasonable comparison if a particular TV scales better that way, but it does not unlock a higher-resolution game image.
Set up the television for gaming
- Game Mode/Game Optimizer: On. It reduces processing and input lag.
- Motion smoothing/interpolation: Off. It may create artifacts and does not turn the game into a true 60-fps mode.
- Noise reduction: Off or Low. Strong filtering can erase fine texture.
- Dynamic contrast: Start Off; only test it if HDR looks unusually flat, because it can hide shadow or highlight detail.
- Sharpness: Near the neutral setting for your model. There is no universal slider number.
- Color temperature: Choose Warm or the set’s accurate/neutral option rather than an artificially cool mode.
- Black level/range: Match the TV input to the Xbox output range; do not blindly select Low or High.
- HDMI enhanced/deep-color setting: Enable the TV’s enhanced format for the port used if needed for 4K HDR.
Menu names and ideal values differ across LG, Samsung, Sony, TCL, Hisense, monitors and older TVs. HDR capability alone does not guarantee strong HDR: some displays have limited brightness or tone mapping, and may look better in SDR.

Choose and calibrate RDR2’s HDR mode
Rockstar added Game HDR, Cinematic HDR and manual peak-brightness adjustment in title update 1.09 for Xbox One and PS4. Rockstar title update 1.09 notes.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Set the TV’s HDR picture mode and run Xbox HDR calibration first.
- Launch RDR2 and open Settings → Display, then its HDR calibration controls.
- Try Game HDR first if you want a brighter, more immediately readable presentation.
- Try Cinematic HDR if you prefer a more subdued, film-like image.
- Adjust peak brightness only when highlights are visibly clipped or the image is clearly too dim; the right value depends on the display, so do not copy a number from another TV.
- Compare a daylight scene, an indoor scene and a night scene. Keep the mode that preserves shadow detail without lifting the whole image to grey.
If both HDR modes look poor, compare with HDR disabled and play in SDR. On a TV or monitor with weak HDR brightness, SDR can look more balanced. Screenshots and online video are unreliable calibration references because capture, compression, playback and your own display all affect the image.
If it still looks blurry
Separate the source image from the output chain. The Xbox can send a 4K signal while the game itself renders at a lower resolution; the TV then scales that image to its panel. A 4K output label is not evidence that every game scene was rendered natively at 4K. A large screen or close seat can make lower-resolution rendering more apparent. Sitting farther away or using a smaller screen may make it less distracting, but does not change rendering resolution.

If your build exposes a motion-blur option, turn it off for a crisper look while panning or riding; leave it on if you prefer the cinematic effect. This is a presentation preference, not a resolution fix. Do not expect a Series X|S 60-fps mode: the Xbox Store listing does not advertise one, and the cited LG guidance identifies the console presentation as 30 fps.
If HDR looks washed out: a recovery sequence
- Quit RDR2 completely.
- Put the TV in Game Mode and verify that the Xbox detects the expected 4K/HDR capabilities.
- Run Xbox HDR calibration again with the TV already in its HDR picture mode.
- Check that the TV’s black-level setting matches the Xbox output range.
- Launch RDR2 and test Game HDR, then Cinematic HDR.
- If both look wrong, disable HDR and compare in SDR.
- If several games have the same issue, test the Xbox directly connected to the TV and check the HDMI input, receiver/soundbar pass-through, cable and TV firmware.
- If only RDR2 looks wrong, reset its display/HDR settings and compare the default configuration.
Rockstar update notes include later HDR-detection, switching, calibration-screen and display-crash fixes; those fixes do not establish a new Xbox graphics mode. See title update 1.14 notes and title update 1.23 notes.
Settings Xbox players cannot change
The Xbox version does not provide the PC version’s detailed graphics menu. You cannot independently raise textures, shadows, volumetrics, water, reflections, anti-aliasing, tessellation, far-distance detail or render resolution, or apply PC upscaling/sharpening options such as FSR or DLSS. Likewise, do not assume Xbox Auto HDR is improving RDR2: the game itself is listed as HDR10-capable and has in-game HDR controls. Xbox says backward-compatibility enhancements such as Auto HDR apply selectively to compatible titles, rather than universally. Xbox backward-compatibility information.
Best starting setup by situation
- Series X or One X with a good HDR TV: Game Mode on, correct 4K output, Xbox HDR calibrated, then compare Game HDR and Cinematic HDR.
- Series S or One S with a 4K TV: Use the same display and HDR steps, but do not expect them to provide the One X image profile. If blur is the main complaint, a Series X is the more direct console upgrade than a more expensive TV.
- Any Xbox with a weak HDR TV or monitor: Compare SDR before trying to force HDR. Some HDR10 displays cannot produce convincing brightness or black levels.
- Xbox routed through a receiver or soundbar: Connect directly to the TV temporarily if HDR or 4K detection fails; verify the intermediary supports the needed bandwidth before reconnecting through it.
As of August 18, 2026, the cited official Xbox and Rockstar pages establish the Xbox One X Enhanced/HDR10 release and its existing HDR features, but do not verify a dedicated Series X|S enhancement patch. The console’s support for 120 Hz or VRR is not evidence that this game has a 60-fps mode.
