It shifts the adventure to the kingdom of Pharloom and puts Hornet—faster, more acrobatic and equipped with silk abilities and craftable tools—at the center. Here’s what changes, what carries over in spirit, and what to know about platforms and announced updates.
How is Silksong different from Hollow Knight?
The biggest change is the playable character and the way the game is built around her. The original Hollow Knight follows the Knight; Silksong follows Hornet after she is captured and taken to Pharloom, a distant kingdom she must ascend on a dangerous pilgrimage. Team Cherry describes the project as having grown from an early DLC plan into a distinct, full-scale sequel. Team Cherry’s original announcement and its current official game site frame the new setting, protagonist and abilities as the core of the change.
Hornet’s movement and combat
Team Cherry highlights Hornet’s nimble movement and acrobatic attacks, alongside devastating strikes and silk-based abilities. That makes her combat identity a central point of difference: this is not simply the Knight’s adventure with a new name, but a sequel built around a different hero and her capabilities. The official descriptions do not provide a complete move list, so specific combat techniques should not be assumed from those summaries.
Craftable tools and a more explicit quest focus
Hornet can craft weapons, traps, mechanisms and other tools for combat and exploration. The reveal also emphasizes hunting rare beasts, finding treasures and fulfilling characters’ wishes, making quests a more prominent part of the adventure’s stated premise. These are gameplay pillars in the official descriptions, not just cosmetic additions.

A new kingdom, foes and discoveries
Pharloom gives the sequel a new setting to explore, with mysteries tied to the kingdom and Hornet’s past. Team Cherry’s current site describes Silksong as featuring over 200 foes. That is the publisher’s promotional figure, not an independently audited count. The original announcement used a different figure—over 150 all-new foes—so the current site’s number is the relevant one for describing the game today.
Silk Soul after completion
Team Cherry says Silk Soul is a distinct challenge mode unlocked after conquering the game. The official description does not establish further details about its rules or how it changes a playthrough.

- Hollow Knight: Silksong is the epic sequel to Hollow Knight, the award winning action-adventure.
- Journey to all-new lands, discover new powers, battle vast hordes of bugs and beasts and uncover secrets tied to your nature and your past.
Art and music
The sequel retains a handcrafted 2D presentation, according to Team Cherry, and features an orchestral score. Christopher Larkin, who composed the original game’s music, returns for Silksong.
Is Silksong a sequel or DLC?
Hollow Knight: Silksong is a full-scale sequel. Team Cherry says it began as a DLC project before growing into a separate game centered on Hornet. It takes place in a new kingdom and follows a new protagonist, rather than adding a chapter to the Knight’s original journey.

What updates and expansion have been announced?
Patch 5
Team Cherry announced Patch 5, version 1.0.30000, as live on PC and coming soon to consoles at the time of its announcement. The notes highlighted Traditional Chinese localization, substantial German script refinements and general fixes. Team Cherry called it the last significant update before the planned Sea of Sorrow expansion. That announcement does not establish the patch’s current rollout status on every platform.
Sea of Sorrow
Team Cherry announced Sea of Sorrow as a free, nautically themed expansion planned for 2026, with new areas, bosses and tools. The announcement gives no precise release date, so consult Team Cherry’s expansion announcement for the official plan rather than assuming a specific launch day or that it is already available.
