No. Nintendo reports 154.02 million Nintendo DS hardware units sold worldwide life-to-date, while Sony reports more than 160 million PlayStation 2 units as of March 31, 2012. That puts the PS2 ahead by at least 5.98 million units, although the sources use different reporting dates and do not establish identical counting methods.
How the Nintendo DS and PS2 sales totals compare
| Console | Manufacturer-reported worldwide hardware total | Cutoff and measurement note |
|---|---|---|
| Nintendo DS | 154.02 million units | Nintendo’s consolidated life-to-date sales figure as of June 30, 2026. The page does not expressly define the figure as sell-in or sell-through. Nintendo sales data |
| PlayStation 2 | More than 160 million units | Sony’s cumulative worldwide hardware unit sales (sell-in), as of March 31, 2012. Sony does not give an exact total above 160 million. Sony sales data |
Using the stated figures, the difference is at least 5.98 million units: 160 million minus 154.02 million. Since Sony reports “more than” 160 million, the actual gap could be larger. The dates differ, so this is a comparison of the manufacturers’ reported totals, not a claim that both figures were compiled to the same cutoff or accounting definition.

What counts as a console sale here?
The figures above compare hardware with hardware. Nintendo’s page also lists 948.76 million Nintendo DS software units, but those are game software sales, not handheld systems; they should not be added to the DS hardware total.
Sony explicitly labels its PS2 figure as worldwide hardware unit sales “(Sell-in).” Nintendo describes its DS figure as worldwide consolidated sales in units, life-to-date, without expressly identifying it as sell-in or sell-through. The official pages therefore support the headline comparison, but not a more specific claim that both companies counted units using identical methods.

How the DS reached its milestone
Nintendo’s fiscal 2009 report recorded 101.78 million Nintendo DS hardware units worldwide life-to-date. At that point, Nintendo said the DS had passed 100 million faster than any console or handheld video game hardware in history. The milestone belongs to that historical reporting context; it does not change the later comparison with the PS2.
In the same fiscal-year results discussion, Nintendo said: “Nintendo has continued to execute its strategy of expanding the gaming audience by broadening the definition of video games and so on.” The surrounding passage describes Nintendo and third-party games attracting novice and skilled players.
