This guide labels the two rules versions clearly and focuses its main recommendation on the revised 2024 rules. D&D Beyond labels those rules “5.5e” on its site and the 2014 rules “5e”; both remain supported and compatible. Read D&D Beyond’s edition comparison.
Which rules does this Battle Master build use?
The main build below uses the revised 2024 fifth-edition rules. The article title’s “DnD 5e” can refer either to the 2014 rules or to the revised rules, which D&D Beyond labels “5.5e” on its site. The company says both versions remain supported and compatible, but compatibility does not make every class feature or feat interaction identical. Use the rules text for the version your table chose.
The 2024 Fighter gets Weapon Mastery at level 1, and chooses its subclass at level 3. The revised Battle Master incorporates maneuvers from Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything, with some options changed. Do not assume a 2014 maneuver or interaction works the same way under the revised rules. D&D Beyond’s Fighter comparison outlines the major class changes.
The best 2024 Battle Master build: a flexible martial controller
Build around the job you want to do in combat, rather than chasing a supposedly universal weapon or maneuver list. A strong general-purpose Battle Master can deal dependable weapon damage while using masteries and maneuvers to help control enemy movement, protect allies, or create openings. These are recommendations based on the published feature structure, not results from a damage test.

Choose Strength or Dexterity for your attack style
Prioritize the ability score used by your chosen weapons: Strength for a typical heavy-weapon melee approach, or Dexterity for an approach built around ranged or finesse weapons. Keep Constitution strong so the Fighter can remain effective in the front line. The exact priority depends on your weapon choices and character concept; the 2014 Fighter guidance likewise recommends Strength or Dexterity first, depending on melee versus archery or finesse, and usually Constitution next. See D&D Beyond’s legacy Fighter guidance.
Use Weapon Mastery to support the party
Weapon Mastery is a 2024 Fighter feature from level 1. The official overview says a Fighter initially selects three weapons and can change the selected weapons after a Long Rest. Its examples include Greatsword with Graze, Flail with Sap, and Javelin with Slow. Choose properties that fit the enemies and positioning challenges your party actually faces; changing selections after a Long Rest gives you room to adapt. D&D Beyond’s Weapon Mastery overview.

Pick maneuvers by the problem they solve
Battle Master maneuvers are most useful when each choice has a purpose. Build a mix that covers the situations your party is likely to encounter, instead of selecting only for damage.
- Accuracy insurance: Consider an option that helps turn an important attack into a hit when missing would waste a valuable opportunity.
- Enemy control: Favor maneuvers that hinder or reposition a dangerous foe when stopping its movement or disrupting its turn matters more than extra damage.
- Defense or repositioning: Look for a way to protect yourself or improve your position when you expect to draw attacks or need to reach a key target.
- Party support: If an ally can make a valuable reaction attack, consider whether a maneuver that enables that attack contributes more than another personal damage option.
- Out-of-combat checks: A maneuver that helps with a relevant ability check can be worthwhile in a campaign where exploration and social scenes matter alongside combat.
For a balanced starting package, choose one option for accuracy, one for control, and one for defense, movement, or party support, then adjust as you learn what your group needs. This is a role-based example, not a claim that any particular named set is optimal: the official material cited here does not establish a complete universally best list or comparative damage results. The revised rules also changed maneuver options, so check each choice’s 2024 wording before using it.

During the playtest process, game rules designer Jeremy Crawford said, “We have now revisited every one of the maneuver options, and a number of them have gotten tweaks, in most cases, to make them easier or more fun to use.” That describes the design process; it does not guarantee that every playtest detail appears unchanged in the final rules. Let the campaign shape the build

- Weapon style: Choose the attack ability and mastery properties that fit whether you fight in melee or at range.
- Party composition: A maneuver that gives an ally a useful reaction attack may be especially valuable when someone in the party can capitalize on it.
- Combat role: Decide whether you need to add damage, impede an enemy, defend an ally, or improve positioning.
- Campaign level: Your subclass arrives at Fighter level 3, so a character below that level has not yet gained Battle Master features.
- Rest cadence: How often the party can take rests affects how you should budget limited combat resources; confirm the recovery rules in the edition you are using.
What changes for the 2014 Battle Master?
If your group uses the 2014 rules, follow the legacy Fighter and Battle Master text rather than carrying over the revised build’s details. D&D Beyond’s legacy Fighter page recommends making Strength the highest score for a melee focus or Dexterity the highest for archery or finesse, with Constitution usually next. It lists Action Surge at level 2 and Extra Attack at Fighter levels 5, 11, and 20. Consult the legacy Fighter page.

Is there a proven universally optimal Battle Master build?
No universal weapon, feat sequence, maneuver list, or tested performance ranking is established by the cited sources. The Fighter and Battle Master rules support different approaches, and the better choice depends on weapon style, party needs, campaign level, and rest cadence. Treat the build above as a flexible starting point, then tailor it to your table rather than assuming a single ranking applies everywhere.
