For the 2014 rules, build a Draconic Bloodline sorcerer around Charisma, a damage type that matches your draconic ancestor, and a balanced spell list—not damage alone. This guide covers the legacy subclass: D&D Beyond labels its 2014 presentation “Legacy” and warns that it does not reflect the latest rules and lore. If your table uses the revised 2024 rules, check those rules separately before applying this progression. D&D Beyond’s Sorcerer class page provides the legacy subclass text.
What makes this build work?
The 2014 Draconic Bloodline is a durable ranged-caster option with a natural elemental theme. Draconic Resilience improves your unarmored AC and hit points, while Elemental Affinity later rewards spells that already deal your ancestor’s damage type. Neither feature turns the sorcerer into a default front-line fighter or lets you freely change a spell’s damage type.
Use this as a flexible framework, not a universally optimal character. Ability-score generation, permitted species and books, campaign encounters, and whether you focus on damage, control, social scenes, or utility all affect the best choices.
Choose your ancestry and elemental damage type
At level 1, Dragon Ancestor sets your damage type, grants the Draconic language, and doubles your proficiency bonus on applicable Charisma checks when interacting with dragons. The 2014 table pairs ancestors and damage types as follows:

Choose the element you like, but consider whether you can learn spells that deal it. That becomes mechanically relevant at level 6. A campaign’s likely enemies and their resistances may also affect how often your favored element is useful.
Set ability scores for your role
Charisma is your primary ability: it determines your sorcerer spell attack modifier and spell save DC. As the official class text explains, “Charisma is your spellcasting ability for your sorcerer spells, since the power of your magic relies on your ability to project your will into the world.” Raise Charisma toward 18 or 20 as your character-generation method and advancement choices allow.
- Dexterity: Improves the unarmored AC granted by Draconic Resilience and supports initiative. Put it next if defense and acting early matter most.
- Constitution: Increases hit points and helps maintain concentration. Prioritize it over Dexterity if you expect to rely on concentration spells or want more staying power.
Species and ability-score rules differ between character-creation versions and tables. Rather than treating a particular species as universally best, compare the actual ability-score increases and features your table permits.

Use Draconic Resilience without overcommitting to the front line
At level 1, Draconic Resilience gives you 1 additional hit point, and you gain 1 more each time you gain a sorcerer level. While you are not wearing armor, your AC is 13 + your Dexterity modifier. This makes a Dexterity investment useful, but it does not replace positioning, defensive spells, or careful resource use.

Your sturdier baseline is a cushion, not a reason to trade places with the party’s front-line characters.
Pick cantrips that match your element and cover different situations
An ancestry-matched damage cantrip gives the theme an immediate expression and can benefit from Elemental Affinity later. The D&D Beyond guide suggests these pairings; they are options, not mandatory choices:

When choosing, compare range, number of targets, attack rolls versus saving throws, and the chance that your campaign’s enemies resist the damage. The guide’s practical baseline is one long-range damage cantrip, one close-range damage cantrip, and two other cantrips of your choice. You can adjust that mix if a close-range attack does not fit your party or preferred tactics.
Build a spell list with more than one job
Sorcerers know a limited number of spells, so each choice matters. The class also lets you replace one known sorcerer spell when you gain a sorcerer level. Use that opportunity to adapt when a spell is underperforming or your character’s role changes.

A useful starting framework is one offensive spell and one defensive or social spell. The guide names Burning Hands, Charm Person, Color Spray, Disguise Self, Magic Missile, Witch Bolt, and Shield as examples to consider. Availability depends on the books and rules your table uses. Chromatic Orb has a costly material component, and Chaos Bolt comes from Xanathar’s Guide to Everything; check access and exact wording with your DM before building around either.

Keep the list flexible
Choose spells that give you options beyond your favored element. A character who invests every spell choice in one damage type can have fewer useful answers when that type is resisted or when the encounter calls for defense, control, or utility. Elemental Affinity applies to a spell that already deals the associated damage type; it does not by itself convert other damage into that element.

At level 3, the 2014 sorcerer chooses two metamagic options. The class lists Careful, Empowered, Extended, Heightened, Quickened, Subtle, and Twinned, among others in its rules presentation. The right pair depends on your spell list and what you want to do in play.
- Heightened Spell: Consider it when making a difficult saving throw especially important.
- Quickened Spell: Offers action flexibility for turns when you want to cast a spell as a bonus action. Check the action rules and sorcery-point cost when planning the rest of that turn.
- Twinned Spell: Can apply to eligible single-target spells, including some ally buffs. Confirm a spell meets the option’s restrictions before choosing it; an area spell such as Fireball cannot be Twinned.
- Careful Spell: Can help when you use eligible area effects near allies. Check the feature’s limits and cost against the spells you expect to cast.
Do not select a metamagic option just because it sounds powerful in isolation. Its eligibility, sorcery-point cost, and fit with your known spells determine its practical value.

What to expect from the subclass as you level

Put the choices together
For a ranged elemental caster, start with Charisma as your strongest score, then choose Dexterity or Constitution according to whether you value AC and initiative or hit points and concentration. Pick an ancestor whose damage type you want to use, take an appropriate damage cantrip, and leave room in your known spells for defense, control, or utility. At level 3, select metamagic that works with those spells; at level 6, favor spells that already deal your ancestry’s type when you want to benefit from Elemental Affinity.
Before finalizing the character, confirm which rules version and sourcebooks your table allows, then check each spell and metamagic option against that rules text. The free Basic Rules include the legacy subclass; a physical Player’s Handbook is not required to access it.
