Forgotten Realms: Heroes of Faerûn and Forgotten Realms: Adventures in Faerûn broaden the focus beyond the Sword Coast by giving players and Dungeon Masters material spanning multiple settings, famous locales, factions, and adventures. They are a wider look at the Realms—not a promise to cover every region equally or a replacement for a complete printed atlas.

How the new books move beyond the Sword Coast

The title’s “beyond the Sword Coast” framing is a comparison with the Sword Coast Adventurer’s Guide, whose official description focuses on the Sword Coast and northwestern Faerûn, including Baldur’s Gate, Waterdeep, and Neverwinter. The new books take a broader frame: Adventures in Faerûn presents five settings, while Heroes of Faerûn includes an Atlas of Faerûn digital map and overviews of ten famous locales. That is a wider treatment of the setting, not evidence that every nation receives equal coverage. D&D Beyond’s Sword Coast Adventurer’s Guide listing; D&D Beyond’s overview of the new books.

Which Forgotten Realms book should you choose?

Book Best suited to What it contains
Heroes of Faerûn Players building characters or looking for lore to shape them Eight subclasses, 34 feats, 18 backgrounds, 19 spells, guidance on divine Renown and worship of 42 gods, information on eight factions, and ten famous locales. Counts are listed by D&D Beyond in its 2025 announcement.
Adventures in Faerûn Dungeon Masters preparing settings, encounters, or a campaign A 288-page guide with five settings, more than 50 short adventures for characters at levels 1–15, 37 monsters and villains, 12 magic items, setting-specific Bastions, and the introductory Lost Library of Lethchauntos adventure for levels 1–3. Figures are from Wizards of the Coast’s product page.

In practical terms, start with Heroes if your immediate need is a player character or setting-connected character options. Choose Adventures if you are running the game and want ready-to-use material for the table. The two books have complementary jobs rather than being alternate versions of the same guide. What’s in Adventures in Faerûn?

Its five settings give Dungeon Masters different campaign tones, from frigid survival horror to genie-inspired high magic and dark urban fantasy. The book’s more than 50 one-page adventures are designed for characters at levels 1–15, and the included Lost Library of Lethchauntos is a separate introductory adventure for levels 1–3. The product page also lists 37 monsters and villains, 12 magic items, and Bastions tailored to the settings. Wizards of the Coast product details.

These pieces serve different kinds of preparation: the settings provide a campaign backdrop, the short adventures offer compact starting points or drop-in sessions, and the creatures and items support encounters and rewards. The official description presents examples including Baldur’s Gate and Icewind Dale; it does not claim that the book is an exhaustive guide to every Realms location.

Print, digital editions, maps, and release information

Wizards lists Adventures in Faerûn with a November 11, 2025 release date and lists French, Italian, German, and Spanish versions for August 4, 2026. Its product page lists English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish as available languages; those dates and languages should not be assumed to apply identically to every region or bundle. D&D Beyond describes physical and digital versions of both main books in its Ultimate Bundle, along with a Baldur’s Gate 3 digital map pack, a Forgotten Realms factions dice set, the Atlas of Faerûn, and three digital expansions: Astarion’s Book of Hungers, Netheril’s Fall, and Lorwyn: First Light. The announcement also lists digital and digital-plus-physical formats for the main books. What “beyond the Sword Coast” does—and doesn’t—mean

The strongest case for the phrase is the change in scope: a guide explicitly centered on one coast and northwestern Faerûn is followed by a player book with continent-wide map material and multiple named locales, plus a DM book organized around five settings and a range of adventure tones. The books make the Realms easier to approach as more than the familiar northwestern cities.

Dungeons & Dragons: Forgotten Realms: Adventures In Faerun Book (Limited Edition Alternate Cover)
  • Level 1–3 intro adventure and 51 short adventures
  • 5 campaign backdrops
  • 39 monsters and villains
  • 51 illustrated maps
  • Advice for running the Realms

That broader frame should not be mistaken for comprehensive coverage. The official descriptions establish multiple settings and examples, but do not say that every region, nation, or major site is detailed in equal depth. Nor do they describe these books as replacing a full printed atlas.
