Divinity: Original Sin 2 – Definitive Edition is available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2, and owners of the matching previous-generation version can generally upgrade for free. The exception Larian identifies is Japan, where PS4-to-PS5 and Switch-to-Switch 2 upgrades cost ¥100. The game arrived on the newer consoles on December 15, 2025.
Which free upgrade can you claim?
The upgrade follows the platform you already own: PS4 to PS5, Xbox One to Xbox Series X|S, or Nintendo Switch to Switch 2. Larian says owners with the older game installed receive the applicable free update; if it is not installed, go to the game’s store page on the new console and download the upgrade. Use the account and store region associated with the original ownership. Larian’s release announcement explains the routes and regional exception.

The fee information is specific: Larian names Japan as an exception only for the PlayStation and Nintendo routes above. Do not assume the ¥100 charge applies to Xbox.
How to claim the upgrade
- If the older version is installed: check for the applicable update on your console. Larian says owners with the earlier game installed receive the free update.
- If it is not installed: on PS5, Xbox Series X|S or Switch 2, open the Divinity: Original Sin 2 store page and download the upgrade. Make sure you are using the account that owns the earlier version and its associated regional store.
- For PS4 disc ownership: insert the disc in a disc-drive PS5 to download or play the PS5 digital version. Keep the disc available; it must be inserted each time. A PS4 disc cannot be used to claim this route on a PS5 Digital Edition.
The US PlayStation Store listing confirms the disc conditions and lists both PS4 and PS5 editions. These details are for the US listing; check the store for your account’s region if the entitlement or price shown differs.

What is different about the current-generation release?
Larian describes the December 2025 release as a “visually upgraded console version,” while making clear that it is not a remake or remaster. The announcement does not establish specific resolution or frame-rate targets, so there is no supported basis here for promising a particular graphics mode or performance level. Larian’s announcement and its official history describe the release.
The existing Definitive Edition itself includes broader game changes. Larian’s Definitive Edition FAQ identifies a reworked Act 4, balance changes across races, skills and enemy encounters, and Story Mode difficulty. That is background on the edition, not a complete list of changes made specifically for the 2025 console release.

Is it a good time to return?
On March 5, 2026, Larian published hotfix version 3.6.0.7178759 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. The developer said the update should resolve some performance issues, low FPS and multiplayer connection problems, and listed fixes including Xbox performance and frame-rate drops and multiplayer disconnections. This is Larian’s description of the patch; it does not establish that every player’s issue is resolved. See the official update history.
Larian describes the game as playable solo, online multiplayer or couch co-op. The US PlayStation Store listing specifies up to four online players with PS Plus and one to two local players. Those player-count details are from the PlayStation listing, not a platform-by-platform comparison.

If you already own an eligible older version, claim the platform-matched upgrade rather than buying the game again. If you do not own it, check the console store listing carefully to confirm you are selecting Divinity: Original Sin 2 – Definitive Edition for your console and not a different-generation listing. The PS Store price can change, so verify the current amount in your regional store.
