They do say that funds deemed abandoned or unused under applicable law will not be returned or restored. Account termination is a separate risk: an unused balance is not refunded when an account is terminated unless law or the agreement requires it.
What the current US terms say about wallet funds
Section 7.3 of PlayStation’s US terms, published in March 2025, says wallet funds are non-refundable and non-transferable except where the law requires otherwise. It also says funds deemed abandoned or unused under applicable law will not be returned or restored. The section does not state a routine expiry period such as a set number of months. That means ordinary non-use and legally abandoned funds are not the same thing. The terms reviewed do not say that a US wallet balance automatically expires after a fixed period, but they do not guarantee that funds considered abandoned under applicable law will be recoverable.
Why you may have seen a 36-month expiry rule
An October 2022 PlayStation Network terms document said: “If you do not use PSN Wallet funds within 36 months of adding them, they may expire, if applicable local laws in your country allow.” The same paragraph said PlayStation would notify users by email before expiry. This is wording from that dated document; it should not be treated as a universal current rule or as the current US terms’ expiry period. See the October 2022 terms document.

What happens if you close your PlayStation account?
Account termination is distinct from a balance expiring through non-use. The US terms say an unused wallet balance is not refunded when an account is terminated, except as required by law or expressly provided in the agreement. The terms also warn that closing an account can mean losing access to purchased content. Check the account and wallet provisions in the US terms.
Does a non-refundable top-up mean the balance expires?
No. PlayStation’s US cancellation policy says, “You cannot cancel a PlayStation™Store wallet top-up. Funds added to the wallet are non-refundable.” That concerns cancelling or refunding a top-up; it does not set a deadline for using funds already in the wallet. Check the terms for your account’s country
Wallet rules can depend on the country registered to your PlayStation account, so US terms do not establish the rule for every region. For example, PlayStation’s UK terms published in March 2026 call these “PlayStation Store Wallet Funds” and state in section 15.1, “We are not a bank and the PlayStation Store Wallet is not a bank account.” That provision does not establish a universal expiry date. For the rule that applies to your balance, open the current PlayStation terms for the country registered to your account and check the wallet-funds and account-termination provisions.
