Yes. For online co-op, one person can buy the full game and invite a second player using the free Friend’s Pass. The invited player installs Friend’s Pass; if neither of you owns the full game, you can play only the first chapter together.
How one copy works for online co-op
- The player who owns the full game launches it and sends an invitation from the game’s main menu.
- The other player downloads It Takes Two Friend’s Pass from the store for their platform, then joins the invitation.
EA says one player must own the full game for both players to access the full co-op experience. If neither player owns it, Friend’s Pass lets you try the first chapter; buying the full game is required to continue. See EA’s Friend’s Pass feature page and Friend’s Pass FAQ.

Check platform compatibility before buying
Friend’s Pass solves the second-copy question, but it does not make every platform combination compatible. EA’s current platform and cross-play guidance covers Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, PC, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch 2. Original Nintendo Switch is an exception: it can play online with another original Switch player, or with a Switch 2 player using the Switch edition. EA’s Switch 2 announcement also says cross-play excludes Nintendo Switch.
EA announced the Switch 2 edition for October 15, 2026 in most regions and October 16 in Japan, Australia, New Zealand, and South Korea. Because those dates are upcoming as of October 8, 2026, check regional availability and confirm which Switch edition your friend will use before deciding where to buy.

Online, couch, and local wireless play have different needs
Online co-op
Each player needs access to a compatible platform, and the invited player uses Friend’s Pass rather than buying a second full copy. EA says online play requires both players to have the relevant Nintendo Switch Online, PlayStation Plus, or Xbox Game Pass subscription. Subscription requirements can depend on platform and region, so check the platform’s current terms. On Steam, EA said in a May 29, 2024 update that the EA App launcher was no longer required, but an EA account remained required for online play. Friend’s Pass players could install the updated Steam version or continue using the EA App version; see EA’s Steam update.
Couch co-op or local wireless
You do not use online Friend’s Pass for couch co-op. EA’s Nintendo Switch guide describes couch play with a separate Joy-Con set or controller for each player, local wireless between two Switch consoles, and online co-op. A second controller matters for couch play, not for inviting someone online through Friend’s Pass.

If you are buying for online play, first check the exact console generation or PC platform each person will use and confirm compatibility. Then one player can buy the full game and the other can install Friend’s Pass.
