No. The Wii cannot play audio CDs. Nintendo also says it cannot play DVD, HD-DVD or Blu-ray discs, or music and movies stored on SD cards, USB hard drives or other portable memory devices. A Wii’s ability to read certain game discs does not make it a music CD player.
Why Wii game discs are different from music CDs
The Wii’s Disc Channel plays supported Wii game discs. On the original Wii model RVL-001, it can also play Nintendo GameCube game discs; that compatibility applies to games, not audio CDs. Nintendo identifies RVL-001 as the Wii model compatible with GameCube games in its game-disc instructions. The Disc Channel overview describes the channel as playing Wii and Nintendo GameCube game discs.
Does the Wii mini play CDs?
No. Nintendo’s Wii mini Operations Manual says the Wii mini does not play CD or DVD discs and is not compatible with GameCube discs. These model differences affect game-disc support; they do not provide audio CD playback.
Can an SD card, USB drive or setting play music instead?
No. Nintendo’s media compatibility guidance says the Wii does not play CD music discs or music and movies stored on SD cards, USB hard drives or other portable memory devices. There is no Wii menu setting or supported storage-device workaround for listening to a music CD.
#1 Best Overall
- Controllers are original OEM (not 3rd party)
- Tested and works well. Nice condition
What to use to listen to a CD
Use a standalone CD player, such as a portable CD player, as a separate device. It is an alternative to the Wii, not an add-on that enables CD playback on the console.
