It is a single-player prequel to DOOM (2016) and DOOM Eternal, built around the Slayer’s Shield Saw, brutal close-quarters combat and large-scale battles.
When did DOOM: The Dark Ages launch?
Bethesda and Xbox list the official release date as May 15, 2025. Steam displays May 14, 2025 on its store page; that storefront date differs from the publisher’s stated launch date. Bethesda’s game page, Xbox’s listing and Steam’s listing provide the respective details.
What kind of DOOM game is it?
Xbox describes DOOM: The Dark Ages as the third installment in the modern series and a prequel to DOOM (2016) and DOOM Eternal. It is a single-player shooter set during a medieval war against Hell. Its metal aesthetic comes through in the dark-fantasy imagery, demons, gore and violent combat—not a change to multiplayer-focused play.
The Shield Saw shapes the combat
The Shield Saw is both a defensive tool and an attack, with effects that depend on the target. In a January 23, 2025 interview with PlayStation Blog, game director Hugo Martin said it can ricochet off plasma shields, stick into flesh to stun larger demons, or break armor and create an area blast. Martin described the design goal as “the depth of Eternal’s loop with the simplicity of Doom (2016)’s control scheme.”

Mechs, a dragon and battlefields
The promoted feature set also includes the Super Shotgun, enhanced glory kills, a Mecha Dragon and Atlan mech sequences, alongside large battlefields. Those set pieces broaden the scale of the medieval war; the Shield Saw remains the clearest example of how the game makes combat tools serve multiple purposes.
