Doom: The Dark Ages is a single-player prequel built around a major change to the series’ combat rhythm: instead of relying chiefly on movement to evade attacks, you use the Shield Saw to block, parry, stun and charge. Ars Technica’s May 2025 review finds that the game often asks players to stand their ground. Whether that more deliberate, shield-led approach feels satisfying is the central question—and the clearest break from the recent Doom formula.
The Dark Ages changes how Doom fights
The reboot-era Doom games made mobility a defining part of combat: keep moving, dodge incoming attacks and shoot openings. The Dark Ages puts a different tool at the center. Ars Technica describes a rhythm organized around blocking, parrying and stunning, with encounters that often reward holding position rather than constantly dodging and firing. That is a genuine redesign, not just a new medieval skin for the familiar loop. Ars Technica’s review is the independent assessment of how that shift plays; the developer’s statements explain the intended design, not whether it succeeds for every player.

What the Shield Saw does
The Shield Saw combines defense and offense. In its January 23, 2025 gameplay explanation, game director Hugo Martin said the team wanted to offer “a brand-new set of cool medieval actions to perform but this time, with fewer buttons to press!” He described contextual effects: a thrown shield can ricochet from plasma shields, stick into flesh to stun larger demons, or break armor and create an area effect. These examples show the design goal: fewer dedicated inputs, with the situation determining what the shield does.
Xbox Wire’s Shield Saw guide also presents the charge as a way to target certain enemies and reach higher ground, alongside upgrade interactions. Those are publisher-provided tactical examples rather than independent judgments about how consistently or enjoyably the mechanics work. PC Gamer likewise identifies the Shield Saw as central to the revised combat loop in its May 2025 review.

Does the slower, more grounded rhythm work?
The key trade-off is clear from the review coverage: standing ground and responding with the shield replaces some of the movement-first feel associated with Doom (2016) and Doom Eternal. For players who enjoy reading attacks and choosing when to block, parry or charge, the shield gives combat a more deliberate center. For players who value near-constant movement above all else, that change may feel like a departure rather than an evolution.
That makes readability and variety more important than the raw number of shield functions. Contextual actions need to make their intended use apparent in the moment, and defensive play needs to retain enough force and pace to feel like Doom. Ars Technica’s review highlights the expectation to stand and fight; it does not establish that every player will prefer this rhythm. The strongest reason to consider the game is precisely the redesign, while the main reservation is whether you want this different balance of movement and defense.

PlayStation describes DOOM: The Dark Ages as a single-player prequel to Doom (2016) and Doom Eternal, set in a dark fantasy and science-fiction world. Its official page says difficulty is customizable and presents the game as an option for newcomers as well as series veterans. That flexibility may help players choose a suitable challenge, but it is a publisher’s positioning, not proof that every combat system will suit every newcomer. Doom: The Dark Ages is most compelling as a deliberate experiment with the series’ combat habits. The Shield Saw gives blocking, parrying, stunning and charging a shared focal point, while the shift toward standing ground sets it apart from the movement-first pattern of the recent games. If that tactical change sounds appealing, the official pages identify it as a single-player prequel with customizable difficulty. If your favorite part of modern Doom is uninterrupted, dodge-and-shoot momentum, the new rhythm is the question to weigh before buying.
