Dispatch Review: A Superhero Workplace Comedy with Strong Character Drama

AdHoc Studio’s Dispatch blends superhero workplace comedy, episodic storytelling, and emergency management. Its writing and characters stand out, but the experience is more cinematic than action-heavy.

Dispatch is worth considering if you want a funny, character-led superhero story more than a conventional action game. AdHoc Studio’s episodic adventure combines story choices and workplace relationships with shifts spent sending a team of misfit heroes to emergencies. Critics praised its writing, performances, and animation; they also noted that much of the experience is cinematic, with less sustained interaction than some players may expect.

What kind of game is Dispatch?

Dispatch is a single-player, episodic narrative adventure from AdHoc Studio. You play Robert Robertson, also known as Mecha Man. After his mech suit is destroyed, he takes a job as a dispatcher, managing a dysfunctional group of heroes and assigning them to emergencies. Steam describes the premise as “a superhero workplace comedy where choices matter.”

The story pairs dialogue choices and interpersonal drama with dispatch shifts. You balance emergencies with office politics, personal relationships, and Robert’s effort to become a hero without his former suit. PC Gamer describes the story as an eight-episode run, giving it a television-like rhythm rather than the structure of a continuous action campaign.

What makes the story and characters appealing?

The superhero setting is a backdrop for workplace comedy, relationships, and redemption. Robert is not simply leading a polished team of crime-fighters: he must coordinate people with their own flaws and tensions while trying to work out what heroism means to him now. That focus gives the story room for character dynamics as well as superhero stakes.

Reviews from GameSpot, PC Gamer, and TechRadar highlight the writing, voice performances, characters, and animation. TechRadar particularly emphasizes the former-villain redemption angle. The result is better understood as a character-focused superhero comedy than as a straightforward power fantasy about fighting through waves of enemies.

How much do you actually play?

The dispatch layer gives you a recurring management role: assess emergencies and send heroes to handle them. Story choices and relationships add another kind of participation, but reviewers describe the overall experience as highly cinematic. GameSpot praised the writing and voice acting while warning that the game can lean too heavily toward its TV-show inspirations; PC Gamer similarly enjoyed the interactive-television feel but wanted more interactivity.

That trade-off is central to deciding whether Dispatch suits you. If you enjoy narrative adventures where characters, dialogue, and dramatic scenes carry much of the experience, its lighter gameplay may be a strength or an acceptable compromise. If you want sustained action, extensive mechanical systems, or frequent hands-on challenges, the dispatch shifts may not provide the depth you are looking for. It is reasonable to compare its broad approach with Telltale-style narrative adventures, but the available evidence does not establish that every choice radically changes the plot.

Is Dispatch worth playing?

For players drawn to superhero stories with humor, strong performances, and a dysfunctional team to get invested in, Dispatch has a compelling pitch. Its distinct appeal is the contrast between heroic emergencies and the relationships and workplace politics surrounding them. Critics’ praise for its writing and performances supports the case for playing it as a story-led adventure.

The qualification is just as important: do not go in expecting a conventional action game with deep combat or constant mechanical challenge. Dispatch puts its characters and cinematic storytelling ahead of that kind of gameplay. Its appeal depends on whether that balance sounds satisfying to you.
