Are Minecraft Java mods free?
Generally, yes. Minecraft Support describes mods as changes that can add or remove content or alter gameplay, and says Java Edition modding is not officially supported. The Minecraft EULA says original Java mods created from scratch may be distributed, but their creators may not sell them for money or try to make money from them. That definition is limited to original work that does not contain a substantial part of Minecraft’s copyrightable code or content. Minecraft EULA
The EULA’s wording is specific: “Any Mods you create for Minecraft: Java Edition from scratch belong to you (including pre-run Mods and in-memory Mods) and you can do whatever you want with them, as long as you don’t sell them for money / try to make money from them and so long as you don’t distribute Modded Versions of the game.” This is not a blanket rule for every third-party site, server arrangement, donation, or type of Minecraft-related content.

Marketplace content
The in-game Marketplace is a separate way to get creator-made content. Its FAQ says Minecoins are used to buy community-created items in the store. A world, skin, texture pack, or other Marketplace listing is paid digital content; it is not evidence that Java Edition mods generally cost money. You buy Minecoins through a payment method associated with your device or account. For device-specific availability and current purchase details, check the live Marketplace and Marketplace FAQ.

Optional hosting-platform subscriptions
Some mod-hosting services sell optional features, not access to every mod they host. For example, CurseForge describes Premium as offering ad-free browsing, faster downloads, and other features. Its page does not present Premium as necessary for downloaded mods to keep working. CurseForge Premium
Modrinth hosts Minecraft Java projects such as mods, plugins, data packs, shaders, resource packs, and modpacks, and offers an app for browsing and installing them. Its creator-monetization article describes distributing ad revenue to project creators; that is one way users may support creators without each mod being a required paid purchase. What to check before downloading
- Edition and content type: confirm whether the listing is for Java Edition or is a Marketplace purchase. The two do not follow the same payment model.
- Minecraft version: check the project’s stated version and its installation instructions; game updates can make mods incompatible with other software. Minecraft EULA
- Support expectations: Minecraft Support says it cannot assist with issues caused by Java mod use. Follow the project’s own guidance if something goes wrong. Minecraft Support
Mods are not modified game clients
The EULA distinguishes original mods from “Modded Versions” of Minecraft. It permits sharing original mods under its stated conditions, but says not to distribute modified versions of the game client or server software. The Minecraft Usage Guidelines also cover community and commercial activity, including some server monetization under specific conditions; that does not make paid mod downloads universally permissible or turn server access into a Java mod purchase.
