Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteNo—wheat, carrots, beetroot, and potatoes do not need sunlight specifically. They need a light level of 9 or higher at the crop itself, so an underground farm can grow with enough artificial light, such as torches.
What light level do Minecraft crops need?
For wheat, carrots, beetroot, and potatoes, the Minecraft Wiki’s crop-farming tutorial gives the requirement as light level 9 or higher at the plant block. Check the light where the crop is planted—not just the block above it.
The light does not have to come from the sun. Torches can provide the needed light, which makes enclosed and underground crop farms possible.
What else does a crop need to grow?
Light is only part of the setup. Plant these crops directly above farmland, and make sure the chunk containing the farm is receiving ticks; crops do not grow in chunks that are not being ticked. The tutorial describes different chunk-ticking requirements for Java and Bedrock, so the details depend on your edition.

Do crops grow at night?
For Java Edition, a Minecraft Wiki community discussion records testing in version 1.20.1 in which crops under open sky continued to grow at night because of sky light. The discussion places the change in behavior around snapshot 18w06a. This is version-specific community documentation, not a guarantee for every edition or game version.
In an enclosed or underground farm, do not rely on open-sky light: provide adequate light at the crop. The cited night-growth discussion does not establish the same behavior for Bedrock.
