A Nintendo Switch Online membership covers Nintendo Accounts, not every profile or console. One account can use an individual plan; if multiple accounts need the service, each needs its own individual membership or coverage through a family plan.
What a Nintendo family membership covers
A Nintendo Switch Online family membership covers eligible Nintendo Accounts in the purchaser’s Nintendo Account family group, up to eight accounts total. The accounts can use different consoles and do not have to live in the same household. Members with different country settings can be in one group, though Nintendo notes that service features vary by country. Nintendo’s family-membership terms explain who can join and how coverage works.
The plan attaches to accounts in the group, not to a particular Switch. A second person using a separate account on your console does not automatically get your individual membership’s benefits. Nintendo says each account needs an individual membership or must be part of a family membership to access Nintendo Switch Online benefits. See the Nintendo Switch Online Service FAQ.
Who can buy and join
A family group can include up to eight Nintendo Accounts, including general, parent or guardian, and supervised accounts. Anyone aged 18 or older in the group can purchase a family membership; the purchaser does not have to be the group administrator. Accounts added later are covered while they remain in the group. If the purchaser leaves, the remaining members lose coverage from that plan until coverage is restored. Nintendo’s Account FAQ describes family-group basics.

Individual or family: compare the accounts that need the service
Count the Nintendo Accounts that need paid benefits, rather than the number of consoles or profiles alone. Compare plans at the same service tier. The following annual prices are Nintendo’s US prices checked on October 8, 2026; prices and membership durations depend on country. Nintendo’s pricing page lists the US options.
| Membership tier | Individual, annual | Family, annual (up to 8 accounts) | Family price above one individual |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch Online | $19.99 | $34.99 | $15.00 |
| Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack | $49.99 | $79.99 | $30.00 |
- Only one account needs online benefits: an individual membership is the direct fit.
- Two or more accounts need the same tier: compare the family price with the cost of separate individual memberships. At the listed US annual prices, two individual memberships cost more than the corresponding family plan.
- You want Expansion Pack benefits: choose and compare the Expansion Pack tier specifically. A standard family membership does not include Expansion Pack benefits.
At eight covered accounts, Nintendo calculates the US annual family price as less than $5 per person for the base tier and about $10 per person for Expansion Pack. Those are Nintendo’s calculations using its listed US prices, not independent consumer-price estimates. Nintendo’s service overview gives these per-person figures.

Term and individual memberships
Nintendo offers family memberships in 12-month increments. Its US FAQ lists individual memberships in one-, three-, or 12-month increments. An account already covered by an active family membership cannot buy or redeem an individual membership code while that coverage is active. Existing individual and family memberships may overlap rather than combine into a longer term, so check auto-renewal settings before joining another person’s plan. Details are in Nintendo’s service FAQ.
Group membership and country settings
Coverage lasts while an account remains in the family group and the purchaser’s family plan is active. Confirm the group arrangement and the relevant country settings before relying on another member’s subscription; Nintendo warns that features are not available in every country.
