Only the first feed to a given critter each day counts toward unlocking it, and the required number of daily feeds varies by critter. Expansion creatures and companions from updates or events may use separate acquisition routes.
Schedules and rosters can change. Check the in-game Collections menu for current availability; the community-maintained companion reference is useful for schedules and foods, but is not an official game source.

How to find the companion you want
Ordinary critters appear in particular biomes, and individual variants can have different days or time windows. Before setting out, identify the exact variant and check when it appears rather than assuming every member of a species is available whenever its biome is accessible. The in-game collection is the best place to confirm current schedules. For a convenient variant-by-variant reference, consult My Dreamlight Valley’s companion list; its schedules are community-maintained and may not reflect a recent patch.
Also check the acquisition route. A companion might be a scheduled critter that you recruit by feeding, an expansion creature, or a reward introduced through an update or event. Those routes are not interchangeable: a reward companion may not have a recurring appearance schedule or favorite-food recruitment process.

How to feed critters and unlock them
- Choose a variant and check its appearance window. Confirm the biome and time in the in-game collection or a current schedule reference before traveling.
- Bring the critter’s favorite food. Favorites vary by critter, so do not rely on a single food for an entire biome or species. The companion reference lists foods by variant.
- Approach according to its behavior. Squirrels can be approached directly. Rabbits run away, so chase them through their repeated dashes until they stop. Sea turtles retreat into their shells; wait for them to emerge before interacting. Other species, including foxes, raccoons, and expansion critters, have their own patterns. See the feeding-methods reference for examples and check the in-game prompt when close enough.
- Feed it, then return on another day if necessary. Gameloft says the number of favorite-food feedings needed differs between critters, and only the first feeding of that critter per day counts toward recruitment. There is no universal number of visits: if it does not join after a feed, try again on a later day when it appears.
Gameloft’s feeding guidance explains the daily limit and varying feed requirements. Feeding a favorite food is the relevant route for recruiting ordinary critters; a food that is merely accepted should not be assumed to count as a favorite-food feed.
Where to find foods and approach tips
Use a variant-specific list rather than trying foods at random: favorite foods differ, and the food information in a community guide can be checked against what the game currently shows. Keep the route simple: travel to the listed biome during the variant’s window, carry its favorite, and watch for the species’ movement cue before trying to interact.
- Squirrels: Usually allow a direct approach.
- Rabbits: Follow as they dash away; they typically become approachable after several chase movements.
- Sea turtles: Wait nearby for the turtle to come out of its shell.
- Other critters: Raccoons, foxes, crocodiles, and newer expansion species have distinct behaviors. Use the approach reference for the species you are targeting rather than extrapolating from the examples above.
What companions do after you collect them
Collected companions are tracked in the dedicated companions section of the Collections menu. Equipping one can support friendship progression and provide a resource-gathering bonus, according to the official June 2025 update notes. The notes give these examples of companion categories and resources:
Rank #2
- 5056635605405
| Companion category | Resource bonus described in June 2025 notes |
|---|---|
| Squirrels | Fruits |
| Rabbits | Vegetables |
| Turtles | Seafood |
| Sunbirds | Flowers |
| Foxes and crocodiles | Fish |
| Raccoons and whimsical creatures | Gems |
These are examples in the June 2025 notes, not a guarantee that every later-added companion follows the same categories or that the roster has not changed. Equip the companion from the collection and check the current in-game details for the available bonus.

Expansion and update companions
Storybook Vale critters
The Storybook Vale update notes establish that the expansion adds critters and variations in its Bind, Everafter, and Mythopia biomes. These creatures belong to expansion areas, so access to the relevant expansion content is part of finding them. Check the collection for each variant’s current window and recruitment details.
Companions introduced by updates or events
Some companions are obtained outside the ordinary biome-and-feeding loop. For example, Gameloft’s July 29, 2026 Pixel Perfect update notes introduced a calico cat companion. Treat companions described as update, event, or other rewards according to the eligibility and acquisition details in their official announcement; do not assume they will appear on a recurring critter schedule.
Quick Recap
Common collection problems
- The critter is not there: Check the exact variant’s appearance day and time, and confirm the schedule in the in-game collection. Different variants may have different windows.
- You cannot get close enough: Stop pursuing a direct approach if the animal repeatedly flees. Follow its species’ pattern—such as chasing a rabbit or waiting for a turtle to emerge—until the interaction prompt appears.
- A feeding did not unlock it: Only the first feed to that critter in a day counts toward recruitment, and the total required feeds differ. Return on a later day and feed its favorite again.
- The companion has no visible critter schedule: Check whether it came from an expansion, update, or event. Its official announcement may define an acquisition route that does not involve ordinary feeding.
Quick collection checklist
- Identify the exact critter variant, not just its species.
- Confirm its biome and appearance window in the current in-game collection.
- Bring the listed favorite food.
- Use the approach behavior for that species.
- Feed once per day and revisit on later days if it has not joined.
- Check expansion access or official reward requirements for companions outside the standard critter roster.
