Disney Illusion Island is a gentle, welcoming take on the Metroidvania that earns praise for its charm, controls and approachable exploration, while offering less of a challenge than players seeking demanding platforming or combat may want. Metacritic’s Nintendo Switch critic page showed a 73 Metascore from 74 reviews when accessed on October 8, 2026; that score is a dated snapshot, not a permanent verdict.

Selected reviews highlight appealing presentation, responsive controls, exploration and accessibility. The main reservation is that the game’s lighter challenge and limited emphasis on combat may not satisfy players who want a tougher, action-focused Metroidvania. That is a recurring contrast in the coverage, not a consensus that every critic shares.
What kind of game is it?

What critics praise
Charm and a relaxing tone
Nintendo Life praises the whimsical world and relaxing tone. The game’s Disney characters and presentation give its exploration a light, inviting feel rather than a threatening or high-pressure one.

Where the game may fall short
The trade-off for that approachable design is a gentler challenge. Nintendo Life says it would have liked the game to be more challenging, and a selected Metacritic excerpt cautions that players looking for combat and action may not find it a good fit. The game is better understood as a relaxed exploration platformer than as a combat-heavy or especially demanding entry in the Metroidvania genre.
That distinction matters most if you are choosing it for genre depth or difficulty. Its appeal is more clearly grounded in accessible movement, exploration, Disney characters and shared play than in a severe test of skill.
Rank #4
- Experience a brand new adventure with Mickey and his friends in a hand-drawn animated film, featuring original orchestral film music and authentic voices.
- Choose your favourite character and unlock special skills as you use fantastic jump 'n'run actions, solve fun puzzles and compete in epic battles against boss opponents.
- Race, swim, swing and jump on your way through a beautiful but also mysterious island and discover magnificent landscapes, captivating characters and hidden secrets.
- Play alone or grab three friends. Rescue the island of Monoth from the comfort of the sofa in 4-player co-op mode.
Is Disney Illusion Island good for solo play?
Yes. It is playable from start to finish as a solo game; it does not require a group. Nintendo Life describes the solo experience as complete, while couch co-op is an additional way to play rather than a prerequisite. If you want a relaxed platform adventure on your own, the review coverage supports that fit. If you are buying primarily for a challenging solo Metroidvania, the modest difficulty is the more important caveat.
Quick Recap
Who is it best suited to?
- A good fit: players who want a whimsical, accessible platform adventure, appreciate collectibles and exploration, or want local co-op for up to four people.
- A less obvious fit: players whose priority is demanding platforming, frequent combat or a tougher Metroidvania challenge.
