How a torch affects warmth in Survival Mode
Bethesda’s September 27, 2017 Survival Mode announcement says that holding a torch temporarily increases warmth. A higher warmth rating makes you feel cold’s effects more slowly; the announcement does not give a numerical torch bonus or specify how long it lasts.
The distinction matters: the torch raises your rating, while Bethesda describes warming up as a separate process. The announcement does not say that simply holding a torch immediately warms your character.
What cold does to your character
In Survival Mode, cold builds as you travel through snowy or rainy areas. Bethesda says its effects include reduced available health, movement speed, and ability to pick locks and pick pockets. Warmth from clothing and armor helps slow those effects, and hot soup or a held torch can temporarily raise the warmth rating.

How to warm up
Bethesda names three ways to warm up: stand near a fire, eat hot soup, or move to a warmer location. The announcement does not rank these methods or give durations or comparative effectiveness.

- Eating hot soup: Temporarily raises warmth rating; Bethesda also lists it as a way to warm up.
- Standing near a fire or moving somewhere warmer: Ways to warm up, according to Bethesda.

When this answer applies
This mechanic is specifically described for Survival Mode in Skyrim Special Edition. It should not be assumed to apply to ordinary play without Survival Mode. Bethesda’s 2017 announcement discussed beta testing and planned console availability at the time; its separate October 3, 2017 Creation Club announcement described the content as working on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC then. Those historical notices do not establish current availability or identical behavior across later versions, platforms, or mods.
