They enter the graveyard as part of the zone-change event, so applicable abilities trigger before state-based actions make the token cease to exist. The important distinction is whether the ability refers to a creature or specifically to a creature card: tokens are not cards.
What happens when a creature token dies?
When a creature token moves from the battlefield to a graveyard, it does enter the graveyard for that event. A matching “dies” ability or other ability that watches for a creature being put into a graveyard from the battlefield can trigger. The token does not disappear before the trigger can happen: Magic’s Comprehensive Rules state that applicable triggered abilities trigger before a token that changes zones ceases to exist (rule 111.7; Wizards of the Coast Comprehensive Rules, February 6, 2024).
In ordinary play, state-based actions are checked after the relevant event and its triggered abilities have triggered. Since the token is then in a zone other than the battlefield, it ceases to exist. Its brief presence in the graveyard is enough for abilities that match the event.
Does “creature” mean the same thing as “creature card”?
No. A token can satisfy an ability that refers to a creature going to a graveyard, but it cannot satisfy a condition that specifically requires a creature card to go there. Rule 108.2b says tokens are not cards, even if a card-sized game supplement represents one.

- “Whenever a creature is put into a graveyard from the battlefield”: a creature token can qualify if the rest of the ability’s conditions are met.
- “Whenever a creature card is put into a graveyard”: a token does not qualify, because it is not a card.
Read the full ability, not just the phrase “graveyard trigger.” Its wording determines what event it watches for and whether additional conditions apply.
What if a replacement effect changes where the token goes?
A trigger requiring a token to be put into a graveyard will not trigger if a replacement effect changes the event so the token is not put there. Triggered abilities trigger only when their specified event actually occurs; an event that is prevented or replaced does not cause an ability watching for the original event to trigger (rule 603.2h in the Comprehensive Rules).

For example, if an applicable replacement effect sends the token somewhere other than the graveyard instead, an ability requiring it to be put into a graveyard from the battlefield does not see that event. Check the actual replacement effect and the trigger’s wording to determine what happened.

No. Under rule 111.8, once a token has left the battlefield, it cannot move to another zone or return to the battlefield. If an effect would move it again, it remains in its current zone instead; it then ceases to exist the next time state-based actions are checked. This does not undo any applicable trigger from its original move to the graveyard.

How to check a specific card
- Read the complete trigger. Look for the exact noun and event: “creature” or “creature card,” and whether the ability requires a move from the battlefield to the graveyard.
- Check whether the event occurred. If a replacement effect changed the destination, the original graveyard event may not have happened.
- Apply the token rules. A token that entered the graveyard can trigger a matching ability before it ceases to exist, but it is never a card and cannot satisfy a card-specific condition.
- Verify the card’s current Oracle wording. Use the wording for the particular card rather than relying on a paraphrase or an informal label such as “dies trigger.”
