UMD discs do not work, and compatibility is not universal.
What “run natively” means on PS Vita
Sony’s PS Vita User’s Guide explains that PSP game software can be downloaded to and played on the handheld. The more precise description is that the Vita runs PSP software in its PSP compatibility environment, rather than running a Vita-native port of the game. Sony’s guide establishes that supported PSP software can be played; the Adrenaline project documentation describes the underlying official environment as Sony’s PSP emulator. That describes the software environment, not a claim about particular hardware circuitry.
If a game also has a separate PS Vita release, that is a different version. Playing the PSP release does not turn it into the Vita version or guarantee the same features or presentation.
How to play PSP games on a PS Vita
The official route is a supported digital copy. Sony’s guide describes downloading PSP software from PlayStation Store or, where supported, downloading it to a PS3 and copying it to the Vita. The exact title must be compatible and the download or transfer route must be available to you.

Sony warns that some PSP titles are incompatible, and some cannot be downloaded to the Vita or copied from a PS3. The available sources do not establish a complete current compatibility list by region, so check the exact game and your region rather than assuming a particular PSP release will work.
Can you play PSP UMD discs on Vita?
No. The Vita does not support PSP UMD discs. Sony stated this in its historical PS Vita FAQ, dated February 16, 2012. A physical UMD cannot be inserted or played on the Vita; the official option described by Sony was to use a supported digital PSP title instead.

What to check before relying on a digital copy
- Title compatibility: Sony explicitly cautions that some PSP software is incompatible with the Vita.
- Availability and region: Whether a title can be downloaded or transferred depends on the supported route and regional availability. Sony’s guide does not provide a complete current region-by-region catalog.
- Ownership: If you already own the digital content, Sony says it can continue to be played, subject to the game’s online features and service availability. For new purchases, Sony’s 2026 notice schedules the end of purchases on PS3 and PS Vita stores in the relevant region starting July 2027. That date concerns new store purchases, not a guarantee that every PSP title is available until then.
- Save storage: PSP game save data uses a memory card. Sony specifies that PCH-1000 Vita systems require a PS Vita memory card; make sure you have storage available for saves.
How PSP games look on the Vita
Playing a PSP game on Vita does not mean it has been remastered or upgraded to Vita-native graphics. Sony notes that PSP graphics may look rough on the Vita because the software was designed for the PSP screen. The Vita guide describes bilinear filtering as an option to smooth the image, but it does not promise a universal visual enhancement.

A supported digital PSP release can run on PS Vita through its PSP compatibility environment. UMDs cannot. Before counting on a specific game, confirm that the title is compatible and that you can access its digital version in your region; also account for memory-card storage for saves.
