Each team hunts monsters, builds Bravery around a crystal, and races to defeat a boss before its opponents. The crossover premise invites a multiverse reading, but Square Enix’s official descriptions do not define a multiverse or explain how the characters arrive in Tokyo.
What kind of game is Dissidia Duellum?
Square Enix describes DISSIDIA DUELLUM FINAL FANTASY as a “3vs3 Team Boss Battle Arena.” Two teams compete against each other and monsters that roam the arena. The objective is not simply to eliminate the opposing players: both teams race to take down the boss first. The official game site presents the game as a mobile title for iOS and Android.

How a battle works
The published battle loop links monster hunting to the boss fight. Players defeat monsters near a crystal to purify it and build Bravery; at maximum Bravery, they can trigger Bravery Burst and use powerful abilities against the boss. The opposing team is racing through the same objective, so fighting monsters and pushing boss damage are parts of one contest. Square Enix’s system guide outlines this sequence.
Choose a role
The official system guide lists four role types, each oriented toward a different contribution:

Abilities and customization
Characters can equip outfits and “Memorias,” which the system guide says boost character stats. The guide also lists BGM tracks drawn from FINAL FANTASY games and arrangements. Abilities feature newly drawn illustrations, with artists named by Square Enix including Raita Kazama, Yoshitaka Amano, necömi, and Toshiyuki Itahana.
Why the story suggests a multiverse—and what is confirmed
Square Enix places the story in modern-day Tokyo, where a giant crystal appears and becomes part of daily life. Strange monsters emerge as a menacing energy pollutes it. Armed warriors then appear, fight, and vanish; residents call them “ghosts.” The official launch description says the main story is fully voiced in Japanese and also mentions short episodes about the warriors’ daily lives. The North American Final Fantasy Portal launch notice gives this story summary.

- The games that inspired a generation come to life once more, in the ultimate 2D pixel remaster!
- These games are newly developed remaster editions based on the original titles. Some of the changes and additional elements found in other remakes of these games are not included.
- The Anniversary Edition includes a pixel character sticker sheet.
- Universally updated 2D pixel graphics, including the iconic FINAL FANTASY character designs created by Kazuko Shibuya, the original artist and current collaborator.
- Beautifully rearranged soundtrack in a faithful FINAL FANTASY style, overseen by original composer Nobuo Uematsu.
That setup brings characters from across FINAL FANTASY into one story, which makes “multiverse” a natural description of the crossover from a reader’s perspective. It is not, however, an established in-game explanation in the official material cited here: Square Enix does not define a multiverse, explain how the characters cross between worlds, or place the story in the continuity of a particular mainline FINAL FANTASY game. The official site instead describes a new DISSIDIA story in modern Tokyo and shows the characters in new outfits.
Release, platforms, and cost
The English game site currently labels the game “Available Now,” lists the App Store and Google Play, and describes it as free to play with in-app purchases. Square Enix warns that purchases include randomized virtual items. Store availability may depend on territory; the cited official notices do not establish complete country-by-country availability.
Launch dates differ by the regional notices. Square Enix Japan’s service announcement says service began on March 24, 2026, for iOS and Android. A North American Final Fantasy Portal notice dated March 25, 2026, says the game is now available on those platforms. Those statements are tied to their respective notices and regions, not evidence of one universal launch instant. Japan service announcement.

Controls and what the beta report can tell you
Square Enix initially described simple controls designed for one-handed play. A later closed-beta report said controller support was planned for the release version, while warning that compatibility with every controller could not be guaranteed. That supports treating a controller as an option, not a requirement or a model-specific recommendation. The beta report does not confirm compatibility for particular controller models.
The beta ran November 7–14, 2025, with 40,000 testers in Japan, the United States, and Canada. Its feedback figures are Square Enix’s survey results, not independent reviews or universal player ratings. Among report-defined respondents, 76% said they enjoyed combat and 61% said they enjoyed character progression. For graphics, 91% chose one of the two satisfaction options: 59% were very satisfied and 32% somewhat satisfied. The report cautions that respondents’ answers need not represent every participant.

The same report discusses planned or described changes involving progression rewards, casual modes, camera behavior, interface readability, matchmaking, missions, auto-control, and controller support. Its closing text says many listed improvements had been implemented by the time the report was written. These are historical developer-reported beta notes; they do not establish which individual issues remain or have been resolved in the current build.
