There is no definitive franchise-wide answer. Official Pokémon guidance says questions not answered in the games, animated movies, or TV shows are left to fans’ interpretations. That makes ordinary real-world animals’ place in Pokémon canon ambiguous: a particular game or episode may depict them, but that alone does not establish a rule for the whole franchise.
What is the official answer?
Pokémon Support says: “It is the intent of the Pokémon creators that questions that have not already been answered within the video games, animated movies, or TV shows, be left to the imaginations and interpretations of Pokémon fans.” The statement is general guidance about unanswered questions, not a specific declaration about animals. It supports treating the question as unsettled rather than claiming that animals either definitely exist or definitely do not. Pokémon Support, January 30, 2026.
What did Pokémon designer Ken Sugimori say?
In an official interview, Pokémon designer Ken Sugimori said that keeping small animals “such as frogs, lizards, and baby turtles as pets” gave the game a sense of reality and made it easier for players to get into it. That is a comment about real-life inspiration and the game’s design, not a statement that those animals exist in the fictional world. Official Pokémon interview, July 26, 2018.
Does Pokémon’s focus on Pokémon prove ordinary animals are absent?
No. Official reference and story material centers Pokémon, but emphasis is not evidence of absence. The official Pokédex catalogs Pokémon. In material about Pokémon Legends: Arceus, Professor Laventon records Pokémon while people learn to live alongside them. Neither source establishes that ordinary animals are absent from the setting. Official Pokémon Legends: Arceus feature, March 8, 2022.

How should you interpret animal appearances?
Keep the claim tied to the work that shows it. If a specific episode, game, or other official depiction includes an ordinary animal, that is evidence for what that particular work depicts. It does not automatically settle what is true across every Pokémon game, show, and era. Likewise, the franchise’s use of real-world inspiration should not be confused with in-world canon: an official brochure, for example, says real locations informed the design of Galar, but that does not answer whether ordinary animals live there. Official Galar region brochure, circa 2020.

What the evidence supports
- Official guidance leaves questions unanswered by the games and screen stories to fans’ interpretations.
- Sugimori’s remarks about frogs, lizards, and baby turtles describe design inspiration, not fictional biology.
- Pokémon-focused reference and ecology material does not prove that ordinary animals are absent.
- A depiction in one work should not be generalized into a franchise-wide rule without an explicit broader statement.
