This is a specific battle rule, not a general immunity to status moves or to everything a Prankster user does.
How Prankster works
Prankster raises the priority of the holder’s status moves by one, which can let one act before a move at ordinary priority. The game’s ability description is “Gives priority to a status move.” See Bulbapedia’s Prankster entry and Serebii’s AbilityDex entry.
When Dark types are immune
From Generation VII onward, an opposing Dark-type Pokémon is immune to a move aimed at it when that move receives increased priority from Prankster. The protection depends on both the source of the priority boost and the battle relationship: the move must be Prankster-boosted and come from an opponent. The rule is described in Bulbapedia’s Dark-type entry; Serebii likewise notes that moves increased by Prankster fail when used on Dark-type opponents.
What the immunity does not cover
- Every status move: Dark types are not generally immune to status moves. A move that does not gain priority from Prankster is not blocked by this rule.
- Moves from an ally: A Dark-type ally can still be affected by its teammate’s status move, even if the teammate has Prankster.
- Every move used by a Prankster Pokémon: The protection applies to moves whose priority is increased by the ability, not all moves the user chooses.
Generation and edge cases
The type-based immunity began in Generation VII; do not apply it automatically to earlier games. The general rule also has move-specific qualifications: moves that target all Pokémon or set traps may work regardless of Dark typing, and reflected moves can affect Dark types in specified circumstances. Interactions involving Instruct or After You also do not fit a blanket reading of the rule. For a particular move or battle, check its behavior in that game rather than assuming every Prankster-related interaction fails.
