If yours is not growing, check whether there is space directly above it and whether the game is giving it random ticks. A torch will not make cactus grow faster.
What cactus needs to grow
The Minecraft Wiki’s cactus reference says light is not required. It describes cactus growth as depending on space directly above the cactus and a random tick reaching its top block.

That means placing a torch beside a cactus is not a solution to stalled growth. The light reference also lists cactus as unaffected by light, though that page is flagged as needing an update. The no-light rule is stated directly on the cactus reference; the cited official release notes below concern cactus flowers, not the light rule.
Why a cactus might not be growing
- Check the space above it. The cactus needs room directly above for growth.
- Allow for random ticks. Growth is not continuous; the top block must receive a random tick. The cited reference does not establish a specific wait time.
- Check whether a new block is immediately breaking. The cactus reference notes that growth can occur even if the new cactus block immediately breaks because it is next to another block. So a cactus that appears unchanged may still have had a growth tick.
These are the checks supported by the reference; it does not provide a version-by-version list of every possible reason growth may stall.

Cactus flowers are a separate growth mechanic
Official notes for Java Edition Snapshot 25w06a and Bedrock Edition 1.21.70 describe cactus flowers growing instead of a taller cactus. In both notes, the chance is 10% when the cactus is one or two blocks tall and 25% when it is at least three blocks tall. The flower also needs empty space on all four sides. These flower conditions do not indicate that cactus needs light.
See Mojang’s Java Edition Snapshot 25w06a notes and Bedrock Edition 1.21.70 notes for the edition-specific details.

Does this apply to every Minecraft version?
The cited cactus reference states that light is not needed, but the official Java and Bedrock notes cited here document the flower mechanic rather than independently confirming the light rule. The answer is therefore based on the reference’s stated mechanic, not a claim that every current version has been separately tested.
