A Pokémon card that is peeling is not automatically fake, and peeling alone is not a reliable way to authenticate one. Treat it as a reason to inspect the card—not as a verdict—and do not peel, bend, or rip a card you want to keep.
Why peeling does not prove a card is fake
“Peeling” can describe different kinds of surface or edge separation. Without examining the specific card, its printing, and what is coming apart, the cause cannot be determined from that description alone. The authentication guidance from Pokémon Support, TCGplayer, and PSA does not identify peeling as a dependable standalone test.
Card construction can vary by language, era, and special printing, so a difference from another card is not automatically evidence of counterfeiting. Compare like with like before drawing a conclusion.
How to inspect a suspect card without damaging it
- Find the closest reference. Check official Pokémon product images and, if possible, a known genuine card with the same language, version, set, rarity, and foil treatment. Pokémon Support recommends checking official images; TCGplayer also recommends comparing details with a reputable card database and a known authentic card. See Pokémon Support’s counterfeit-card guidance and TCGplayer’s guide to spotting fake Pokémon cards.
- Check printing and card details. Compare the text, fonts, symbols, HP and attack values, weakness and resistance information, retreat cost, set symbol, and card number. Look for details that do not match the correct reference, rather than relying on a single apparent flaw.
- Compare the back, foil, and visible edges. Check whether the back design and foil pattern match the same card version. PSA lists print clarity, font discrepancies, foil patterns, and paper stock or layering among the factors used to identify counterfeits. Its 2025 fraud report describes those considerations; no one home check is conclusive.
- Use bright light only as a clue. Pokémon Support says, “Counterfeit cards are often easy to see through if you hold them up to a bright light, so this is a good way to identify a fake.” But TCGplayer cautions that the light test produces too many false positives to recommend on its own. If the card looks unusually transparent, investigate further; do not treat the result as proof. A phone flashlight may be enough for this optional check.
Why not try the rip or bend test?
Both can damage a card you may want to keep. TCGplayer discusses a rip test that can expose a layer inside card stock, but says it has not confirmed the test’s reliability through experiments. It also describes bending as damaging and unnecessary. Neither is a sensible first step for assessing a collectible card.

When to ask someone else to assess it
If the details do not line up and authenticity matters to you, take the card to a local shop that specializes in trading cards. Pokémon Support suggests asking a specialist shop to evaluate a potentially counterfeit card. Confirm what the shop actually offers; a shop visit should not be treated as a guaranteed formal authentication or grading service.
