When does Thorns use armor durability?
Thorns has a chance to retaliate against an attacker, and that retaliation costs durability on the armor carrying the enchantment. Microsoft’s enchantment reference describes Thorns as damaging the attacker at a durability cost. The Minecraft Wiki’s mechanics reference specifies two additional durability points when Thorns inflicts damage.

That extra loss is tied to a Thorns damage trigger—not simply to being hit while wearing Thorns armor. The cited mechanics reference gives the two-point amount as a per-trigger detail; it does not establish that ordinary level III multiplies this penalty compared with lower normal levels.
How can you reduce or repair the wear?
Unbreaking
Unbreaking reduces the chance that durability is lost. The mechanics reference says its usual chance to ignore individual durability points also applies to Thorns’ extra penalty. It mitigates wear rather than removing Thorns’ durability cost altogether.

Mending
Mending uses experience to repair an item, according to Microsoft’s enchantment reference. It can help maintain the enchanted armor as you collect experience.

The sources support the basic answer—Thorns can cost the enchanted armor durability—but do not establish exact current parity between Java and Bedrock. The Minecraft Wiki’s history notes a Java Edition durability change in version 1.16.2, and flags some Thorns usage details for updating to version 1.21. The two-point penalty is therefore best treated as a mechanics-reference detail, not as a complete official specification for every edition and version.
