Does The Elder Scrolls Online Support Cross-Platform Play?

ESO does not support multiplayer across PC/Mac, Xbox, and PlayStation groups. PC and Mac share a megaserver; console platforms are separate.

No. The Elder Scrolls Online does not let players on different platform groups play together. PC and Mac players share a megaserver, but Xbox, PlayStation, and PC/Mac each have separate multiplayer environments. That means an Xbox player cannot join a PlayStation or PC/Mac friend, and a PlayStation player cannot join someone on Xbox or PC/Mac.

Which ESO platforms can play together?

Platform pairing Can these players play together? What to know
PC (Windows) and Mac Yes They share the PC/Mac megaserver, according to ESO Support.
Xbox and Xbox Yes Xbox players use a dedicated Xbox megaserver.
PlayStation and PlayStation Yes PlayStation players use a dedicated PlayStation megaserver.
Xbox and PlayStation No The two consoles use separate megaservers.
PC/Mac and Xbox or PlayStation No Console megaservers are separate from the PC/Mac megaserver.

These platform boundaries follow ESO’s official support guidance on playing with friends on different platforms. The guidance was checked on October 8, 2026; the page does not display a publication date.

Does linking an account let you play across platforms?

No. Linking platform accounts does not combine their characters or progress. ESO’s account page says linked PlayStation and Xbox accounts remain entirely separate for characters and progress: ESO account management.

In practical terms, account linking is not cross-play or cross-progression. It does not move your character to another platform’s megaserver or let you join friends playing there.

Can you transfer characters, items, or progress if you switch platforms?

No. ESO Support says it cannot transfer characters, gear, gold, Crowns, or other items between platforms or servers, and does not plan individual platform transfers. Your progress on one platform therefore does not carry over when you start playing on another.

See ESO Support’s platform-transfer guidance for the stated restrictions.

Do you need to buy ESO again on another platform?

Yes. ESO Support says a separate game copy is required for each platform. Buying a copy for a different platform gives you access to play there; it does not connect that platform’s players to friends on another megaserver. Check the edition and platform carefully when purchasing.

The purchase requirement is explained in ESO Support’s cross-platform FAQ.

What to do if you want to play with a friend

  1. Check your platforms. The supported cross-platform pairing is PC (Windows) with Mac. Xbox and PlayStation each play within their own platform group.
  2. Use the same platform group. To play together, you and your friend need to access ESO through the same platform group and its megaserver.
  3. Plan for separate progress and copies. If you switch platforms, expect to need another game copy and to begin without transferring your existing characters or items.

ESO’s support pages describe the current separation between platform megaservers but do not make a dated statement about whether cross-play might be added in the future. Do not treat the present restrictions as a promise that they can never change.
