How to start A Candle in the Storm
Complete Shadowed Prayers, then find Menella at Volcanic Island Camp on Agamen Volcanic Island. She may be around the camp or the hot springs; PowerPyx says she approaches when you get close, while Game8 points players to the camp. The quest’s premise is an assassination attempt on Nadinia, with the captured attacker’s accomplice and the person behind the plot still to uncover. Kiranico’s quest database reproduces the quest description: “As the empress performed her supplications to the Lambent Flame, an assassin’s dagger took aim at her back. Though the brigand was caught, the true mastermind is still at large.”

How to investigate the assassination attempt
Question Herman in Bakbattahl Gaol
- Travel to Bakbattahl Gaol and speak with Herman, the imprisoned brigand. He initially refuses to talk.
- Pay Herman 5,000 G for his information, according to PowerPyx, Game8, and Neoseeker’s walkthroughs.
- Return to Menella and report what Herman told you.
Walkthroughs agree on the bribe and sequence, but their descriptions of the route into the gaol vary. Follow the in-game quest marker rather than relying on an unverified entrance route.
Give Ashe the false location
- Return to the gaol and find Ashe, a member of the Coral Snakes.
- Tell him, “The empress is in my custody,” as Game8 specifies. This is the false location intended to mislead the gang.
- Go back to Menella again.
How to resolve Nadinia’s plan
After the second report, meet Menella on the west side of Bakbattahl and follow the quest marker to the meeting place. The decision is whether to support or oppose Nadinia’s plan involving a double. Neoseeker describes three possible outcomes:

- Support the plan: Follow the staged encounter. When prompted, draw or swing your weapon to trigger its resolution. PowerPyx and Game8 recommend this route for the top listed reward.
- Oppose the plan: This leads to a battle and a different reward.
- Support the plan, then attack the mastermind: Neoseeker lists this as a separate outcome. It resolves the quest, but does not give the Ring of Amplification in its reported rewards.
The walkthroughs do not establish a time limit or a guaranteed failure condition, so avoid treating either as a required concern.
