Choose tackle for the fish you want, then reel only when the rod is low; pause when it rises and your character struggles against the fish.
What you need for deep-sea fishing
The Sea Fishing Rod is the tool for ocean fishing. It has separate float and lure slots. A float helps with casting range and accuracy; a lure attracts fish. A lure is optional, but the rod is less likely to get a bite without one.
For larger Ocean Fish, fish from a boat farther offshore and use more advanced floats and lures made with a Tackle Receptacle. The rod reference describes this approach for deep-ocean catches, but does not give a complete set of recipes or a species-by-species tackle chart.
How to fish in the deep ocean
- Equip the rod and tackle. Put a float in the float slot and, if you have one, a lure in the lure slot.
- Take a boat offshore. Move into the deep ocean rather than fishing from shore when targeting larger Ocean Fish.
- Look for a shoal. Ocean Fish gather in moving shoals. Cast near one, since the species and its behavior affect what you can catch.
- Watch the rod as the fish pulls. Reel when the rod is low or between low and high. Pause when the rod is raised and your character is struggling against the fish.
- Keep adjusting your rhythm. When the fish swims toward you, reel; stop reeling when it fights. Continue responding to the rod rather than holding the reel continuously.
How to avoid snapping the line
Reeling while the rod is raised and the fish is pulling hard can snap the line, losing the fish and the attached float and lure. At the other extreme, pausing while the rod is low gives the fish a chance to escape. Use the rod’s movement as the cue: reel on a low rod, and let up during a high-angle struggle.

Choosing tackle for a target
Floats and lures
Use a float to improve casting range and accuracy, and a lure to make a bite more likely. Advanced options crafted with a Tackle Receptacle are recommended for deep-ocean fishing. Species do not all respond to the same bait or lure, so there is no established universal best lure for every fish.
Heavy Weighted Lure
The community reference for the Heavy Weighted Lure says it attracts fish above 80% of that species’ weight range. This is a targeting threshold, not a guarantee of a catch.

Crabby Hermit eligibility
The Crabby Hermit accepts fish above 70% of their species’ weight range. That is a separate eligibility threshold: it should not be confused with the Heavy Weighted Lure’s 80% threshold.
