Repeated World of Warcraft disconnects can come from several places—your Wi-Fi or internet connection, a temporary computer issue, or an outdated or broken addon. Blizzard’s general connection guidance starts with restarting your computer and optimizing your connection. The quickest way to narrow it down is to note any exact error message, then test one likely cause at a time.
Why WoW keeps disconnecting
Blizzard groups disconnects, lag, and rubber-banding under connection troubleshooting. That does not mean every disconnection has the same cause: the problem may be local to your computer or Wi-Fi, involve an addon, or persist farther along your internet connection. The symptom alone is not enough to identify which one applies.
Blizzard also says outdated or broken addons can often cause lag and disconnections. If you use addons, testing with them disabled is one way to check whether they are involved.
What to try first
- Write down the exact error message. Search Blizzard Support for the full message or code; Blizzard maintains separate guidance for some problems. Do not guess what a code means from its appearance. For example, the support search results list a World of Warcraft article for WOW51900101, but the available information here does not establish what that code means. Search Blizzard Support for WOW51900101.
- Restart your computer. Blizzard recommends this early in connection troubleshooting because a restart can resolve temporary issues or program conflicts. Blizzard Support: World of Warcraft Technical Troubleshooting.
- Reduce competing internet use and restart your modem. Close other programs using the internet. To power-cycle the modem, unplug it for 30 seconds, reconnect it, and wait for service to return; then restart your computer. These steps are tests, not a guaranteed fix. Blizzard Support: Optimizing Your Internet Connection.
- Compare Wi-Fi with a wired connection. If you play over Wi-Fi, connect the computer directly to your modem or router with an Ethernet cable if one is available. Blizzard notes that wireless connections can have difficulties with online gaming. If you do not already own a cable, buying one is optional; this is a diagnostic test, not a recommendation for a premium cable. A successful wired test points toward Wi-Fi as a possible factor, but does not rule out every other cause. Blizzard Support: World of Warcraft Technical Troubleshooting.
- Test without addons. Update your addons, disable all of them, and play long enough to see whether the disconnect returns. If the problem stops, re-enable addons gradually to help identify the culprit. If disabling addons does not help, Blizzard’s troubleshooting sequence suggests a full UI reset, which is more disruptive; consult its current instructions before proceeding. How to choose the next step
| Test | What it helps isolate | Cost or disruption |
|---|---|---|
| Restart the computer or close other internet-using programs | Temporary computer issues, program conflicts, or competing network use | No purchase required; closing programs may interrupt their activity |
| Disable addons | An outdated or broken addon | No purchase required; restore addons afterward and re-enable them gradually |
| Try Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi | A problem associated with the wireless connection | Use a cable you already have if possible; buying one is optional |
| Contact your internet provider | Connection trouble that remains after Blizzard’s internet-optimization steps | Contact your provider; the outcome depends on the connection and service |
| Consult Blizzard Support | A specific game error or persistent WoW problem | Search for the exact message and follow the matching support guidance |
When to contact your ISP or Blizzard
If Blizzard’s internet-optimization steps do not resolve the issue, Blizzard advises contacting your internet provider. For a game-specific error or a problem that continues after the basic tests, search Blizzard Support using the exact error message or description. Its support search also lists “Disconnected from Blizzard Services” guidance for high latency or frequent disconnects; check the current article for applicable steps rather than assuming a particular cause. Search Blizzard Support for frequent disconnects.
