Not automatically. In League of Legends, Riot changed the general ranked reset cadence to once per year rather than once per split. But there is a specific 2026 exception: at patch 26.9, eligible Master, Grandmaster, and Challenger players in six named regions are reset to Master with 0 LP. The answer therefore depends on the year, your tier, and your region.
What happens to your rank at the end of a split?
Under Riot’s general policy announced for 2025, a split ending does not by itself trigger another rank reset. Riot said it was changing resets from once per split or season to once per year. Its November 2024 update described the plan as “one big reset at the start of the year” with no additional resets afterward. Riot’s ranked update and its 2025 gameplay preview explain the change.
That policy followed complaints about ranked fatigue, frequent climbing, and volatility. Riot said the previous cadence could make climbing feel less rewarding and ranked lobbies less balanced. Historically, the prior split system included a soft MMR reset for higher tiers; that older detail is one reason players may remember splits as reset points.
What does “reset” mean?
Displayed rank and matchmaking rating (MMR) are related, but they are not the same thing. A soft MMR reset adjusts matchmaking rating rather than necessarily setting every player’s displayed rank to a fixed tier. Riot’s 2026 announcement is more explicit: it names both visible rank and MMR as reset for a limited high-tier group.

So an unchanged visible rank after a split does not mean there was no matchmaking adjustment, and an announced reset should not be assumed to affect every tier or region in the same way. Check the exact notice for the season and queue you play.
The 2026 exception: a scoped Master+ reset
Riot’s April 21, 2026 article announced a special reset at patch 26.9, the start of Season 2. It applies to current Master, Grandmaster, and Challenger players in North America (NA), Western Europe (EUW), Northeast and Eastern Europe (EUNE), Brazil (BR), Latin America North (LAN), and Turkey (TR). Riot said their visible rank and MMR would be reset to Master with 0 LP. The announcement is in Spanish; the original wording is available in Riot’s midseason 2026 update.

- Result: visible rank and MMR reset to Master with 0 LP.
This is not a blanket rule that every player gets reset at every split. Riot’s notice identifies the affected tiers and regions; it does not establish the same special reset for other players or regions.
How the annual reset showed up in 2026
Riot’s Spanish-language patch 25.24 notes say that the 2025 Season 3 ranked split ended January 7, 2026, and the 2026 Season 1 began January 8, when LP and rank reset for the new year. That example fits the annual boundary Riot had announced; it should not be read as evidence that each split causes a reset. See the patch 25.24 notes.

Why older guides may say every split resets your rank
Rank-reset rules have changed. Riot’s 2023 update described a midyear partial reset and five placement games, while its later plan reduced the general cadence to one reset at the start of the year. The five-game detail belongs to that earlier policy, not a universal current rule. Riot’s 2023 ranked update is useful historical context, but check current season announcements before relying on an old guide.
Does a reset mean you need placements again?
Not necessarily after an ordinary split under the annual policy: the end of a split alone is not a general reset trigger. Placement requirements depend on the applicable season and mode rules, and the cited 2026 special notice specifies the reset result for its Master+ group rather than establishing a universal placement-game count. Don’t carry the five placement games from Riot’s 2023 policy forward as a current rule.

Does a long break reset your rank?
A break and a split are different causes of rank change. Riot’s 2024 update discussed decay and returning players: it reported that many people returning after a long break had win rates in the high 30% to low 40% range, and cited a 48% average win rate for ex-Diamond players in Emerald and 49% for ex-Master players in Diamond. Those figures describe Riot’s context for its 2024 policy discussion; they are not predictions for an individual account or every region. See Riot’s ranked update.

Quick check: which rule applies to you?
- Confirm the game. This answer is about League of Legends; another game called “League” can use different ranked rules.
- Check the season and patch. A split end is not automatically a reset under the general annual policy, but a dated season announcement may specify an exception.
- Check your tier and region. The patch 26.9 notice applies to Master, Grandmaster, and Challenger players in NA, EUW, EUNE, BR, LAN, and TR.
- Read whether the notice covers rank, MMR, placements, or more than one. These terms are not interchangeable, and Riot’s high-tier 2026 announcement explicitly names visible rank and MMR.
