Donkey Kong Country Returns HD launched on Nintendo Switch on January 16, 2025. It brings upgraded visuals and extra levels from the Nintendo 3DS edition, and a January 2026 update added Dixie Kong and Turbo Attack mode. Here’s what the Switch release includes and how it differs from what is established about the Wii original.
When did Donkey Kong Country Returns HD come to Switch?
Nintendo released Donkey Kong Country Returns HD for Nintendo Switch on January 16, 2025. The original Donkey Kong Country Returns debuted on Wii in 2010. Nintendo describes the Switch edition as bringing together elements of the Wii and Nintendo 3DS versions, with upgraded visuals and the additional levels that appeared in the 3DS version. Nintendo’s Switch listing identifies the game as a Switch release; the launch date and edition details appear in Nintendo’s announcement and Nintendo UK’s announcement.

What does the Switch edition include?
HD presentation and additional levels
The defining changes Nintendo highlights are updated visuals and the extra levels from the 3DS release. That makes the Switch version more than a straight reissue of the 2010 Wii game, but Nintendo’s descriptions do not establish that every feature or technical detail from the Wii and 3DS editions is identical in HD.
Original and easier play options
Nintendo offers Original Mode, which reflects the Wii game’s design, and a reduced-difficulty option with extra hearts and other benefits. The regional Nintendo store listing and Nintendo’s gameplay tips describe these choices. They let players opt for a more forgiving experience without changing the fact that the game’s central platforming challenge is built around its original design.

What did the 2026 update add?
Nintendo’s support history lists version 1.1.0, released January 20, 2026. Its additions and changes include:
- Dixie Kong: In applicable solo or two-player situations, players can choose Dixie Kong in place of Diddy Kong.
- Turbo Attack: The mode joins Time Attack and becomes available after clearing a course once.
- Brazilian Portuguese: The update adds support for the language.
- General changes: Nintendo lists fixes and image-quality enhancements.
On Nintendo Switch 2, the same update adds GameShare for local users, optimizes display output for the system and high-resolution TVs, and shortens loading times. These are Switch 2 improvements; Nintendo’s support notes do not say that they apply to the original Switch. See Nintendo’s version history for the full update record.

How does the Switch release compare with the Wii version?
The confirmed differences are the Switch edition’s HD visuals, its additional levels from the 3DS release, its reduced-difficulty option, and the later update content. Nintendo’s original Wii product page lists one or two players and Wii Remote or Wii Remote plus Nunchuk control options. Those details describe the Wii game; they should not be assumed to describe every Switch control option. The official material cited here does not provide a complete technical comparison of resolution, frame rate, or every control scheme across editions. Nintendo’s Wii product page gives the original release details.
Is the Switch version worth buying if you own the Wii game?
That depends on whether the additional levels, portability, updated presentation, and newer options matter to you. In its Switch review, Nintendo Life called it a fine way to play the original while finding limited reason for existing fans to buy it again beyond the control changes. That is one outlet’s assessment, not evidence of a broader critical consensus.
