The 2024 Player’s Handbook has four Barbarian subclasses: Path of the Berserker, Path of the Wild Heart, Path of the World Tree, and Path of the Zealot. This ranking covers those four current handbook options—not every Barbarian path published across D&D books. “All nine” is not a stable current count: it depends on the publication cutoff and whether the revised Wild Heart and its earlier Totem Warrior identity are counted separately.
How this ranking works
This is an editorial ranking of the four 2024 Player’s Handbook subclasses, not an official balance list. It weighs damage contribution, durability and ally protection, control and mobility, out-of-combat utility, ease of play, and how much a path depends on the campaign. A lower rank can still be the best fit for a particular character or party.
The rules matter: the 2024 versions are not always identical to their earlier counterparts. D&D Beyond’s 2024 handbook overview identifies Berserker and Wild Heart as revised, World Tree as new, and Zealot as imported from Xanathar’s Guide to Everything with revisions. Its 2014-versus-2024 Barbarian comparison notes, among other changes, that the revised Berserker’s Frenzy no longer imposes exhaustion.
Ranked: the 2024 Barbarian subclasses
1. Path of the World Tree — best for battlefield reach and party support
World Tree earns the top spot for combining the Barbarian’s front-line presence with support and movement options. D&D Beyond characterizes it as mixing support with martial prowess. Its features arrive at levels 3, 6, 10, and 14: Vitality of the Tree, Branches of the Tree, Battering Roots, and Travel Along the Tree, respectively. That progression gives the path more than one way to contribute as a fight develops.

Choose World Tree if you want a martial character whose role can include helping allies and changing where combat happens, rather than focusing only on personal damage. Its placement here is a judgment about breadth of role, not evidence that it deals the most damage or is objectively strongest at every table.
2. Path of the Berserker — best for a direct, aggressive damage role
Berserker is the clearest fit for players who want a straightforward offensive loop. Under the 2024 Basic Rules, Frenzy adds damage to the first qualifying Strength-based hit after you use Reckless Attack while Rage is active. The trigger makes the subclass’s core payoff easy to understand: commit to an aggressive attack and gain extra damage on a hit.

The path also has tools for resisting disruption and punishing attackers. Mindless Rage grants immunity to the Charmed and Frightened conditions while Rage is active. Retaliation lets you make a melee attack as a reaction when a nearby creature damages you. These features reinforce an in-your-face style, though using a reaction is a choice with an opportunity cost if another reaction becomes relevant.
The 2024 version is especially worth distinguishing from the legacy one: its Frenzy no longer causes exhaustion, according to D&D Beyond’s comparison of the 2024 and 2014 Barbarian. Pick Berserker when you want a potent, uncomplicated combat identity more than a broad package of support or exploration abilities.

3. Path of the Wild Heart — best for a nature-themed Barbarian with flexible identity
Wild Heart is the 2024 handbook’s revised path descended from the earlier Totem Warrior. That lineage matters when looking up older guides or character advice: the names are related, but a legacy Totem Warrior write-up should not automatically be treated as the rules for the 2024 Wild Heart.
It ranks below World Tree and Berserker here because the available official descriptions establish its revised status, but do not provide a comparable, detailed account of its role against the other three. The ranking therefore does not claim it is mechanically weaker. It is a good choice if the path’s nature-centered concept is what you want; check the 2024 rules text for the specific options and effects before building around a particular feature.
Rank #4
4. Path of the Zealot — best for a faith-driven warrior
Zealot brings an overtly religious or cause-bound identity to the Barbarian. It was published earlier in Xanathar’s Guide to Everything and revised for the 2024 handbook. Its presence in both eras makes version clarity important: use the 2024 rules when creating a character for a campaign using the 2024 Player’s Handbook.
It ranks fourth only within this editorial framework. The sources establish its revised status, but not a quantified comparison of damage, survivability, or overall performance against the other paths. Choose it when a divine champion or fervent warrior is central to the character you want to play, rather than treating this placement as a verdict on every table’s build.

Why the title “all 9” needs a scope note
The 2024 Player’s Handbook contains four Barbarian subclasses, not nine. Older books add legacy paths, including Ancestral Guardian, Battlerager, Beast, Storm Herald, Totem Warrior, Wild Magic, and Giant. Those names come from multiple publications; a four-subclass handbook list is not a complete catalogue of every published option.
The count changes depending on what is included and how revisions are handled. In particular, counting Totem Warrior and the 2024 Wild Heart as separate entries can make an all-time list larger even though Wild Heart is the revised 2024 identity connected to Totem Warrior. Without a defined publication cutoff and a rule for treating revisions, “all nine official” is not a definitive current roster.
For current handbook rules, D&D Beyond’s overview of the 2024 Player’s Handbook names the four options above. A legacy-inclusive ranking needs to specify which books and rules versions it covers; it should not present one selection of nine as the unambiguous official total.
Which path should you choose?
- Pick World Tree if you want to combine front-line combat with support and battlefield movement.
- Pick Berserker if you want a direct offensive loop built around Rage, Reckless Attack, and follow-up pressure.
- Pick Wild Heart if its revised nature-centered identity suits your character concept; confirm the 2024 feature choices in the handbook.
- Pick Zealot if your Barbarian’s defining idea is devotion to a deity, creed, or cause.
All four are presented in the 2024 handbook, but they serve different concepts and roles. Use the ranking to narrow choices, then make the final call based on the character and campaign you want to play.
