Dragon Age: The Veilguard lets you take Rook and up to two companions into a mission, for a maximum active party of three. That is separate from the game’s roster of seven companions: you choose which companions to bring rather than taking the whole roster into battle.
How many characters can you take on a mission?
Your active mission party can include Rook and up to two companions. Windows Central described that limit in a hands-on preview based on roughly seven hours of PC play; the official PlayStation product description confirms that players choose which companions come into battle, but does not state the numerical cap in its text.
Does the game only have three companions?
No. PlayStation’s official game description identifies seven companions in the broader roster. The three-character limit applies to the group accompanying Rook on a mission, not to how many companions exist in the game.
How do you choose and control companions?
You select companions to accompany Rook on a mission. In combat, the player controls Rook and uses the Ability Wheel to command companion abilities; Windows Central’s preview says you cannot switch to directly control the other party members.

What does Rook’s class choice change?
The official PlayStation description lists three classes—Warrior, Mage and Rogue—and says each has two weapon types and abilities that can be selected during combat. These options shape Rook’s combat approach; they do not change the stated party size.
What is known about the three-character limit?
The available sources establish the mission-party size but do not give a developer explanation for why it is capped at Rook plus two companions. It would be speculation to attribute the limit to technical constraints, narrative goals or a particular combat-design decision.
