Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For the connected Erdrick Trilogy, play Dragon Quest III → Dragon Quest I → Dragon Quest II. That is the story chronology, not the original release order: Square Enix calls III the trilogy’s narrative beginning and says I and II take place after it. For the wider series, “in order” can mean release order, story chronology, or a practical starting point—and official sources do not establish one complete timeline for every numbered game and spin-off.
What order should you play the Erdrick Trilogy?
Play the games in this order for the connected story:
- Dragon Quest III
- Dragon Quest I
- Dragon Quest II
Square Enix describes Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake as “the narrative beginning to The Erdrick Trilogy.” Its announcement for Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake says those adventures take place chronologically after III. This is the trilogy’s story order; it should not be mistaken for the order in which the original games were released.
Which Dragon Quest game should you start with?
Choose based on whether you want the connected Erdrick story, a classic JRPG starting point, or an entry without a story connection to other works. Square Enix’s introductory guide to Dragon Quest recommends III for someone seeking a classic JRPG and suggests following it with I & II. The same guide says Dragon Quest VII Reimagined has no story connection to other works; that supports it as an independent starting option, not a claim that every other numbered game is connected.

| What you want | Starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| The connected Erdrick story | Dragon Quest III | It is the trilogy’s narrative beginning; continue with I, then II. |
| A classic JRPG | Dragon Quest III | Square Enix’s guide recommends it for this preference. |
| A game with no story connection to other works | Dragon Quest VII Reimagined | Square Enix’s guide explicitly describes it as having no story connection to other works. Check your region’s store for current platform availability. |
Is there an official order for the whole series?
Not one established by the official sources cited here. They confirm the Erdrick Trilogy’s chronology and offer specific starting guidance, but do not lay out a complete timeline for every numbered game, remake, MMO, and spin-off. A release-order list answers a different question from a story timeline; for the entire franchise, avoid treating an unofficial or fan-assembled chronology as a definitive publisher-confirmed order.
Which versions are available?
Square Enix reported that Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake launched on October 30, 2025, with the Steam version launching October 31. The publisher listed Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC; availability can vary by region, platform, and store. Its announcement described the HD-2D Erdrick Trilogy Collection as digital-only and bundling Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake with Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake. Check your local store before buying.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why do people call it the Erdrick Trilogy?
The three games form a connected story, and their chronological order begins with III rather than I. The original Dragon Quest launched in Japan on May 27, 1986, according to Square Enix. Separately, Square Enix Holdings reported more than 85 million Dragon Quest units in global package shipments and digital sales as of the end of March 2022. That is a historical company-reported total, not a current sales figure.
