Dragon’s Dogma 2 is a single-player action RPG whose best moments come from the same systems that make it awkward: vocation-based combat, AI companions called Pawns, dangerous monsters, and travel that can feel like work. That mix can make a journey tense one minute and ridiculous the next. The fun is real, but so are the friction and the challenge; how much you enjoy them depends on whether you like adapting to a world that rarely behaves like a tidy action-game set piece.
What kind of game is Dragon’s Dogma 2?
PlayStation describes Dragon’s Dogma 2 as a single-player, narrative-driven action RPG. You customize an Arisen, choose a vocation, and explore the kingdoms of Vermund and Battahl. Combat is shaped by your vocation, your party, enemy weaknesses, and the terrain—not just by the weapon in your hands. PlayStation’s game overview gives the official outline.
Your party includes Pawns, AI companions who fight alongside you and respond to commands. You customize your main Pawn, then can hire up to two more, including Pawns created by other players. That party system is central to the experience: companions can provide support and useful combat roles, but they also make fights feel less like isolated duels and more like unruly group encounters.
Why does the combat feel tough?
The challenge comes from making decisions before and during a fight. A party that lacks the right mix of roles can struggle; an enemy’s weakness may change which attacks are worth attempting; and terrain can affect how you approach a monster. Large encounters can become dangerous while you are exposed and committed to an attack, spell, or climb. The game’s official description emphasizes those interacting factors, but “hard” is ultimately an impression, not a universal difficulty rating.

Vocations influence how you fight, how far away you can operate, and how much you need to stand your ground while an attack or spell develops. The official manual says you begin with four vocations, with more becoming available as the story progresses. Capcom’s Adventuring Basics manual covers the starting options; PlayStation’s overview also lists additional roles.

The table describes broad roles, not a ranking. A vocation’s value depends on the rest of the party and the encounter: a ranged specialist can still be in trouble if enemies reach them, while a frontline fighter is more useful when companions can exploit the space they create. Trying different vocations is part of learning what kind of risk and responsibility you enjoy.

What makes it gritty—and goofy?
The grit comes from the danger of being out in the world and from fights that can turn against you when positioning, party roles, or timing go wrong. Monsters are not just targets waiting politely for a sequence of attacks; they create moving, physical encounters in which the terrain and the rest of your party matter. That makes exploration feel consequential rather than like a string of disconnected arenas.
The same interacting systems can also produce slapstick. Pawns may offer advice or join the fight while a monster barrels through the party; a carefully planned approach can dissolve into a scramble of attacks, repositioning, and companions reacting to the chaos. The official material establishes the Pawn and combat systems, not a universal consensus that the game is funny. The goofiness is best understood as an impression of how those systems can collide, not a promise that every encounter is comic.

Why can Dragon’s Dogma 2 feel janky?
Part of the friction is deliberate: travel can take time and effort, rather than functioning as instant movement between every destination. That choice can make a trip feel like an expedition, but it can also interrupt momentum when you would rather get back to the next quest or fight. PC Gamer’s June 11, 2026 update coverage describes that travel friction from one reviewer’s perspective.
There is an important distinction between inconvenience by design and a technical defect. The available sources support the claim that travel has been frictional and later adjusted; they do not establish a comprehensive list of technical problems or show that every player encounters the same issues. Calling the whole game “janky” is therefore a subjective shorthand for an experience that can feel rough around its edges, not a verified diagnosis of specific bugs.

Has the travel friction changed?
Yes. PC Gamer reported that the June 10, 2026 update added an Eternal Ferrystone, additional Portcrystals, oxcart stopovers and schedule changes, and reduced stamina use for dashing outside combat. It also reported Pawn, map, and other adjustments. These changes ease some of the travel burden; they do not mean every journey is effortless or that the game’s broader design has been replaced.
Is Dragon’s Dogma 2 worth playing?
If you enjoy learning a combat system through experimentation, coordinating a party, and dealing with encounters that can veer off-script, Dragon’s Dogma 2 has a strong case. Switching vocations changes your responsibilities, Pawns give the party its own unpredictable texture, and monster fights can be exciting precisely because they do not always unfold as planned. For me, those qualities make the adventure a lot of fun.

It is a less natural fit if you want fast travel to erase most of the distance between objectives, consistently clean-feeling encounters, or a challenge that depends only on individual reflexes. The game asks you to accept friction alongside its spectacle. That combination—not polish without compromise—is what makes the experience memorable.
What to know about the Dark Arisen expansion
As of October 8, 2026, Capcom’s June 10 announcement schedules Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen for October 9, 2026, so it has not yet reached its announced release date. Capcom describes it as “a paid expansion title that adds a new story to Dragon’s Dogma 2.” Its announcement lists Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC; it also says the Nintendo Switch 2 version combines the main game and expansion. Package details differ by platform, so check the relevant store listing for the edition you plan to buy. Capcom’s June 10 announcement has the release details.
