If EA SPORTS FC 26 freezes or closes unexpectedly on Nintendo Switch, start by restarting the console, then check for system and game updates. If the game still fails, use Nintendo’s corrupt-data check before deleting and redownloading it. These are Nintendo’s general Switch troubleshooting steps—not eleven FC 26-specific fixes or a confirmed diagnosis of a known FC 26 bug.
What to try first
Nintendo’s guidance covers downloaded software that loads slowly, lags, freezes, or leaves the console unresponsive. It applies to Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED. Follow the low-impact checks first; save deleting and redownloading the game for later.
- Restart the console. Hold the POWER button for at least three seconds, select Power Options, then Restart. Nintendo recommends restarting for both downloaded-game freezes and unexpected closures.
- Force the console off only if it is unresponsive. Nintendo’s general article about downloaded software freezing says to hold POWER for 20 seconds, then turn the console on again. Its separate article for the message “The software was closed because an error occurred” says to hold POWER for 12 seconds if the console is unresponsive. Keep these instructions tied to their respective situations; Nintendo’s pages give different durations.
- Check for a system update. Open System Settings > System > System Update and follow any prompt to update.
- Check for a FC 26 update. Connect the Switch to the internet, highlight the game on the HOME Menu without opening it, press + or –, then select Software Update > Via the Internet.
Nintendo documents these checks for downloaded software problems in its general freezing and unresponsive-software guidance and its instructions for the unexpected-close error message.
Check the game’s data before reinstalling
Use Nintendo’s built-in check before deleting the software:

- Open System Settings.
- Select Data Management > Manage Software.
- Select EA SPORTS FC 26, then choose Check for Corrupt Data.
If the check identifies a problem, follow the on-screen instructions. Nintendo recommends checking for corrupt data as part of its troubleshooting sequence; the check does not guarantee that every crash will be resolved.
If you see “The software was closed because an error occurred”
For this specific message, Nintendo recommends deleting the game and redownloading it to the console’s system memory. If FC 26 is installed on a microSD card, remove the card before redownloading. Nintendo does not establish that buying a different card is a fix.

Digital software can be redownloaded using the Nintendo Account that purchased it. Follow Nintendo’s error-specific instructions for deleting and redownloading. Reinstalling is a troubleshooting step, not a guarantee that the problem will be fixed.
When a download or update will not finish
If FC 26 or its update is still downloading, Nintendo notes that some software pauses downloads while it is being played. Save your progress and close running software, then check that the console has an active internet connection. If needed, open the user page from the HOME Menu and choose Update Download Progress. If progress remains stuck, restart the console. These steps address a stalled download or update; they are not a demonstrated cure for a crash after the game is installed.

Separate online problems from crashes
Check service status if the symptom is a connection failure or disruption in an online mode. EA provides an EA server-status page, and Nintendo platform-service status may also be relevant. Service status changes over time, and a status check does not identify the cause of an offline freeze or local software crash.

What is—and is not—confirmed about FC 26 on Switch
EA’s FC 26 support hub lists support topics and a Switch download guide, but the reviewed material does not document a Switch-specific crash notice, confirmed FC 26 fix, or EA-endorsed Switch workaround. The steps above are Nintendo platform guidance, not evidence that FC 26 has a particular known bug.
EA’s separate crashing and freezing article is for PC, PlayStation, and Xbox. Its platform-specific directions should not be treated as Nintendo Switch instructions.

If Nintendo’s documented steps do not resolve the specific unexpected-close error, contact Nintendo Support, as its error guidance directs. Have the exact message ready and note whether the closure happens at launch, in a particular mode, or after a repeatable action. Those details can help support understand the symptom, but are not themselves a fix.
