But its handcrafted miniature-style world, faster encounters with weaker enemies, and revamped battle and vocation systems give it a distinctly modern presentation. Whether it feels so seamless that you forget its origins is a matter of taste—not a claim established by the publisher’s materials.
What is Dragon Quest VII Reimagined?
Square Enix describes Dragon Quest VII Reimagined as a remake of Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past, originally released on PlayStation in 2000. The story begins on secluded Estard Island, where childhood friends discover ancient tablet fragments. Completing tablets opens routes to other worlds and their stories. Square Enix classifies the game as a single-player RPG. Square Enix’s media kit provides the remake and story details.
The global release date listed by Square Enix is February 5, 2026, with Steam listed for February 6. Platforms are Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam, and Xbox on PC. Square Enix’s announcement and its media kit list the release and platforms.
What makes this remake look different?
Square Enix says the original character designs by Akira Toriyama have been reimagined in a handcrafted 3D style inspired by miniature figurines. Towns, environments, and dungeons use a diorama-like aesthetic. That description establishes a new visual direction, not a claim that the remake looks identical to the PlayStation game—or that every player will find it indistinguishable from one.

- Classic Combat, Improved! - The battle system in DRAGON QUEST VII Reimagined has undergone significant changes. Turn the tides of battle with new vocational perks. Each vocation has its own unique ability, from all-out attacks to those that support your allies. Battle speed adjustments and an auto-battle feature are also available. Battles can progress without interruptions between each turn, depending on the tactics selected for the protagonist and allies. While on the field, players can pre-emptively strike monsters and instantly defeat them If the monster is weaker than the party.
The approach gives the adventure a cohesive miniature-world presentation while retaining the original designs as its foundation. The media kit describes the intent as preserving a warm atmosphere while adding detail; that is the publisher’s characterization, rather than an independent comparison with earlier editions.
How have battles and progression been modernized?
Quicker encounters with weaker enemies
Players can attack weaker enemies in the overworld and defeat them without entering a conventional battle. For encounters that do become turn-based fights, the game offers adjustable battle speed, auto-battle, and configurable tactics. Together, these options give players ways to reduce routine combat or let the party act with less manual input.

- Hand-Crafted Aesthetic - The character designs, originally crafted by world-renowned manga artist Akira Toriyama, have been reimagined into a charming 3D art style using dolls actually created in the real world. Environments and dungeons are also brought to life with a unique hand-crafted, diorama-style aesthetic that vividly illustrates the beloved world of the DRAGON QUEST series Enhanced Story - While remaining faithful to the original story, the narrative of DRAGON QUEST VII Reimagined has been enhanced to provide a more streamlined story experience. Alongside the main adventure, players can enjoy optional side quests, stories and minigames
Vocations with more flexibility
The vocation system includes vocation-specific perks and “moonlighting,” which lets a character use two vocations at once. That creates more flexibility in how characters develop and combine abilities. Square Enix’s media kit also notes revised spells and abilities, as well as changes to monster appearances and behaviors. It does not provide a comprehensive comparison against every previous version, so these details should not be treated as a complete list of what changed.
A more accessible menu and optional activities
A tab-based menu is intended to make information easier to access. Outside the main adventure, the media kit lists a battle arena and the Lucky Panel minigame. These are documented features, though the available materials do not establish how they compare with all prior editions.

Is it accurate to say you can’t tell it’s a remake?
Not as a factual description. The game is explicitly a remake, and its new art direction and revised systems are central to how Square Enix presents it. A player might find the miniature-style visuals and streamlined combat so natural that the game feels newly made, but that is a subjective reaction. What the official materials establish is a remake that reworks presentation and play while adapting the story of the 2000 PlayStation RPG.
