Neither announcement established a final number of jobs lost.
What happened at Funcom and The Outsiders?
Funcom confirmed on October 1, 2025, that it was restructuring and making redundancies. The company said it could not yet determine the exact impact. On October 6, The Outsiders founder and creative director David Goldfarb announced that the studio would close and said employees at The Outsiders and Funcom Stockholm had been affected by Funcom’s layoffs.

These are related but distinct developments: Funcom announced restructuring across projects and studios; Goldfarb specifically announced The Outsiders’ closure. His statement does not establish that the entire Funcom Stockholm operation was closing.
Why was Funcom restructuring?
Funcom described the changes as a response to Dune: Awakening moving from development into long-term live operation. It said it wanted to focus internal resources on new content, features and improvements while preparing for a major console release planned for the following year.

“The transition from development to long-term live operation, while also building towards a major console release next year, will require us to restructure our teams and focus our resources from across projects and studios.”
That is Funcom’s stated rationale, not evidence that the restructuring caused or funded any particular release outcome. In June 2025, Funcom reported that Dune: Awakening had sold more than one million copies, according to Game Developer. Funcom also described it as the biggest release in its 32-year history, a company characterization reported by PC Games Insider.

How many people did Funcom lay off?
A final headcount is not established by the available announcements. Funcom said on October 1 that it could not yet determine the exact impact. Goldfarb confirmed that staff at The Outsiders and Funcom Stockholm were affected, but did not state how many people lost their jobs.
Funcom’s careers page currently describes the company as having over 300 employees across four studios, and lists Oslo, Lisbon, Durham and Bucharest. That is a company-provided snapshot, not an audited post-layoff total or a basis for estimating the number of affected employees. The page does not list Stockholm; that omission alone does not establish the location’s full legal or operational status. See Funcom’s operations careers page.

What happened to The Outsiders?
Goldfarb said the 10-year-old studio would close in a message reported by PC Gamer. He also said The Outsiders and Funcom Stockholm had been affected by the layoffs. The reported announcement does not give a headcount or say that all Funcom Stockholm staff were dismissed.
Did Dune: Awakening reach consoles?
Yes. In a September 17, 2026 update, publisher Bandai Namco said Dune: Awakening had entered console head start and would officially release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox on September 22. The publisher also said a physical PS5 edition was available at retail and online. Its announcement reported a peak of 189,000 concurrent Steam players; that is a publisher-reported peak, not a current player count. Details are in Bandai Namco’s console update.
The console release fulfilled the milestone Funcom had cited as part of its 2025 operational focus. The later release does not, by itself, show how the restructuring affected development, staffing or the launch.
