There is no single best Nightfarer for every Elden Ring Nightreign run. The right pick depends on whether you prefer close-range combat, ranged damage, defense or support—and how much execution risk you enjoy. The original eight Nightfarers each have a passive ability, a character skill and an ultimate art, but they are fixed characters rather than classes you build from scratch. The game is designed for three-player cooperative expeditions. Bandai Namco’s official overview and character-fit guide emphasize those different styles and team synergies.
Roster note: This guide covers the original eight. The Forsaken Hollows DLC added Scholar and Undertaker on December 4, 2025, bringing two more Nightfarers to the available roster for DLC owners. See the official DLC details.

Quick picks: the best Nightfarer for each playstyle
| Nightfarer | Best fit | Trade-off to consider | Roster |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wylder | Newcomers who want balanced melee and a safety net | More generalist than specialized | Base game |
| Guardian | Players who prefer defense and protecting teammates | Prioritizes holding the line over maximizing damage | Base game |
| Duchess | Quick attackers who enjoy dodging and timed bursts | Low durability makes positioning important | Base game |
| Ironeye | Ranged damage and utility from a distance | Relatively low health | Base game |
| Raider | Sturdy, aggressive bruiser play | Rewards accepting pressure and risk | Base game |
| Recluse | Technical spellcasting with offensive and support options | Effective Magic Cocktails depend on gathering and combining elemental residues | Base game |
| Executor | Close-range fighters who like timing-dependent combat | Effective but riskier execution | Base game |
| Revenant | Support-oriented players comfortable using summons | Fragile profile and demanding team-support role | Base game |
These are role-based recommendations, not a current balance ranking. Bandai Namco’s guidance spans toe-to-toe melee, defensive support and ranged spellcasting; no one role is presented as best for every team.
Which Nightfarer should you play?
Wylder: the approachable all-rounder
Choose Wylder if you want to learn melee fundamentals without committing to a narrow specialty. He is a sensible first character to try: his one-time death-prevention passive gives him a safety net, and his grappling skill adds a mobility option. He suits players who want a straightforward starting point before deciding whether they prefer defense, speed or a more technical kit.
#1 Best Overall
- Elden Ring: Nightreign - Seekers Edition /PS5
Guardian: the defensive frontliner
Pick Guardian if your instinct is to guard, draw pressure and make space for teammates. His strong defense and ally-protecting ultimate favor a team-first approach over chasing maximum damage. He is the clearest fit among the original eight for players who would rather help the group survive a difficult push than lead with burst offense.
Duchess: the evasive burst attacker
Duchess suits players who enjoy quick attacks, deliberate dodges and choosing the right moment to capitalize. Her Restage skill can repeat recent damage on a target, making timing central to her burst potential. Her low durability means a missed dodge or poor position can be costly; choose her if you are willing to trade toughness for mobility and damage opportunities.
Ironeye: ranged damage with team utility
Choose Ironeye if you prefer contributing from range. The PlayStation launch guide describes shots that bypass defense and a way to revive allies from a distance; Windows Central’s May 2025 guide also highlights consistent ranged damage, while noting his relatively low health. He is a natural option when you want to deal damage without making close-range fighting your default.
Raider: the pressure-taking bruiser
Raider is the pick for a sturdy, aggressive style that turns incoming pressure into counterattacks. His tombstone ultimate can help ranged teammates, giving the bruiser a team utility angle as well as frontline presence. His kit rewards players comfortable accepting risk rather than avoiding every dangerous exchange.
Recluse: the technical spellcaster
Recluse is for players who want to cast both offensive and support spells and are willing to manage a more involved toolkit. Her Magic Cocktails become effective through collecting and combining elemental residues, so the spellcasting loop depends on gathering what the situation provides. Bandai Namco’s character guide identifies her as a fit for ranged spellcasting; she is less suitable if you want a purely uncomplicated melee role.

Executor: the timing-focused close-range fighter
Executor fits players who want close-range combat built around timing and can accept a steeper execution risk. Windows Central’s launch-era guide placed Executor among its top three, but described the character as riskier; that assessment is one writer’s May 2025 judgment, not a universal or current power ranking. Choose the style because it appeals to you, not because of that old tier-list placement.
Revenant: fragile support with summons
Revenant is a demanding choice for players who want to support a team with summons and clutch tools. Windows Central’s launch-era guide describes her as fragile, so she suits someone comfortable protecting a lower-health caster and contributing through support rather than simply trading blows. If you are still learning how to stay safe in combat, a more forgiving frontline option may be easier to manage.
Best Nightfarer for beginners
Start with Wylder if you want a balanced melee character and a one-time death-prevention passive. If you learn best by playing safely and helping the team, Guardian’s defensive focus is another reasonable starting point. For a beginner who prefers attacking at range, Ironeye is the more natural fit, but his relatively low health means distance is not a substitute for awareness.

How the original eight became available
The base-game roster contains eight Nightfarers, but not all were selectable immediately. Six were available at the outset; Duchess and Revenant could be unlocked through progression, according to PlayStation’s May 2025 guide. That distinction matters if you start the game and see fewer than eight choices.

How to choose for a three-player team
Think about the job you want to do and the risks you are willing to manage, rather than treating a tier list as a universal answer. The game’s official character-fit guidance explicitly covers melee, defensive support and ranged spellcasting, while its official overview describes three-player cooperative expeditions.
- Want to hold the frontline? Consider Guardian for defense or Raider for a sturdier, more aggressive counterattacking role.
- Prefer to attack from a distance? Ironeye offers ranged damage and utility; Recluse is the spellcasting option if you want a more technical approach.
- Want fast, close-range damage? Duchess favors evasion and timed bursts; Executor rewards timing in a riskier close-range style.
- Want a generalist or support role? Wylder offers a balanced entry point, while Revenant brings summons and team tools with a fragile profile.
These roles can complement one another, but the sources do not establish a single required team composition. Treat coordination and preferred playstyle as the deciding factors, not a fixed “best team” formula.

No definitive cross-context ranking is established here. In its launch-era guide dated May 29, 2025, Windows Central ranked Ironeye, Executor and Raider highest, while also saying all eight were viable. That is a dated editorial view from before the Forsaken Hollows additions, not a fresh test or current consensus. Use it as one perspective only; a character’s fit for your preferred combat style and team role is more useful than treating the order as a rule.
What about Scholar and Undertaker?
Scholar and Undertaker are not part of the original eight covered above. Bandai Namco says Scholar is an academic with strong arcane ability who gains advantages through battlefield observation, while Undertaker is an abbess with strength and faith who fights with ruthless efficiency. Both arrived in The Forsaken Hollows, a DLC released December 4, 2025, which adds two Nightfarers. Bandai Namco America confirmed its release on consoles and PC in its release announcement.
