Find the Golden Claw in a sarcophagus on the Pyramid’s second basement level. On Basement 1, go to the northwest chamber and inspect the upper-left statue to reveal the hidden staircase. Take the item only when you are prepared for a difficult trip back out: encounters become very frequent after pickup.
Where to find the Golden Claw
- Enter the Pyramid, north of Ibis, and reach Basement 1.
- Make your way to the northwest chamber.
- Inspect the upper-left statue to reveal the staircase to Basement 2.
- Follow the route on Basement 2 to the sarcophagus and accept the Golden Claw.
The Pyramid’s main objective is the Magic Key, so the Golden Claw is an optional detour. If you are also exploring for other items, consider finishing that work before taking the Claw; you can then make a dedicated trip for it. RPG Site’s Pyramid walkthrough and Game8’s guide identify the hidden route and pickup location.
Plan your escape before taking it
Once you take the Golden Claw, encounters become very frequent while you remain in the Pyramid. Guides differ on how often battles trigger, so do not plan around a fixed number of steps. One walkthrough also warns that Evac cannot be used to escape, and that magic is disabled in the basement; do not rely on spell healing there. RPG Site’s walkthrough describes the basement restrictions and exit route, while Game8’s guide notes that the encounter effect ends after leaving the Pyramid.
- Bring healing items before descending to the basement.
- After taking the Claw, retrace the basement route to the stairs and work back to the exit.
- Use Zoom or a Chimaera Wing only after reaching the exit area, as described in the walkthrough.
Golden Claw attack value: sources disagree
Published item references give conflicting attack values for the HD-2D remake: Dragon Quest Wiki contributors list +62, while Samurai Gamers lists 50. Because the figures do not match, neither should be treated as definitive without checking the item in your current game version. Both references associate the item with the Pyramid basement and increased encounters. Dragon Quest Wiki’s Golden Claw entry was checked in 2026; Samurai Gamers’ item-data page is dated 2024.
