Take the binoculars from the plane-crash starting area to the Mesa, then use them to look directly at the sun. Keep looking until the achievement notification appears; the badge is awarded after the run ends.
How to unlock the Astronomy Badge
- Pick up the binoculars at the plane crash near the start of the run. They are required for the challenge. If you left them behind or lost them earlier, PC Gamer recommends restarting the run.
- Carry the binoculars to the Mesa. You can keep them in your bag until you reach the biome.
- Stand on the Mesa ground and aim at the sun through the binoculars. The ground offers a clear view and makes it easier to be sure you are inside the Mesa, rather than near the campfire at its edge.
- Keep looking until the achievement notification appears. The guide describes the required viewing as “a decent amount of time” but does not specify an exact duration.
- Complete or end the run. The achievement notification appears first; the badge is credited after the run ends.
The binoculars are no longer needed for this badge once the challenge registers.
What the badge requires
The Astronomy Badge description is “Look a little too closely at the blazing sun.” The PEAK Wiki’s unlock instruction is to use binoculars on the sun in the Mesa. The listed cosmetic reward is Matrix Glasses.
If the badge does not trigger
- Check that you have the in-game binoculars and are using them to look directly at the sun.
- Move onto the Mesa ground if you may be at the biome’s edge, then continue looking until the achievement notification appears.
- If it still fails, check the current in-game accolade text and patch notes. The unlock method is documented by a PC Gamer guide published August 12, 2025, and a PEAK Wiki listing; current patch-specific behavior is not independently confirmed.
