There is no single best position in EA SPORTS FC 24: the right choice depends on whether you are playing Ultimate Team or Manager Career, your formation, available players and tactics. In Ultimate Team, 4-2-3-1 is a reasonable balanced starting shape—not a proven or timeless competitive ranking. What “best position” means in FC 24
The phrase can mean two different things. In Ultimate Team, it may refer to a formation slot or to the positions a specific card is eligible to play. In Manager Career, it is about where a player fits within your formation and tactical vision. Those questions have different answers, so choose the mode first.

Formation alone does not make a position effective. Instructions, player attributes and the way you want to attack or defend all shape what a role does. The available sources do not establish a universal position ranking or controlled head-to-head formation results.
Best positions and formation approach for Ultimate Team
Start with a balanced 4-2-3-1
A November 5, 2023 guide from Pro Game Guides recommends 4-2-3-1 as a balanced option. It places two defensive midfielders behind an attacking midfield line and one striker, offering defensive cover while keeping support near the forward. This is a dated practical recommendation, not evidence that the formation is the current or universally strongest meta.

The guide’s example instructions are:
- Both full-backs: stay back while attacking.
- Both CDMs: cover the centre and stay back while attacking.
- CAM and striker: use forward positioning.
That setup gives the central midfielders a protective job while the CAM supports the striker. Adapt it to your players and preferred style rather than treating every instruction as mandatory.
Check card eligibility before assigning a slot
A formation slot and a card’s eligible positions are not the same thing. FIFAUTeam’s FC 24 positions guide says a card has a primary position and can have up to three secondary positions. It also says using a card out of position removes that player’s individual chemistry and may affect teammates. Check the positions listed on the card in-game before building around it; do not assume a player keeps chemistry in an unlisted role.

Choosing positions in Manager Career
In Career Mode, build around the squad and your intended tactical vision rather than searching for one best position. EA’s FC 24 Career Deep Dive explains that any Tactical Vision can be applied to any formation. It also describes tactical-fit scouting: for a Counter-Attack CM, scouts prioritize attributes including Agility, Stamina, Dribbling and Acceleration; a Tiki-Taka CM needs attributes such as Ball Control, Short Passing and Positioning.
This distinction is useful when comparing players for the same nominal position. A central midfielder selected for quick transitions may need a different profile from one expected to keep possession and link short passes. Use the role’s job and your tactical vision to guide scouting and development.

How to compare formations for your squad
There is no sourced performance ranking for FC 24 formations, so compare the trade-offs that matter to your team instead:
- Defensive cover: consider how many midfielders stay behind the ball and whether your full-backs are expected to advance.
- Central attacking support: look at whether a CAM or central midfielders can connect the midfield to your striker.
- Forward spacing: decide whether one striker with support or multiple forwards better suits your available cards and preferred attacks.
- Playstyle: prioritize the shape that supports possession, counter-attacking or wide play for your squad.
- Player fit: confirm that your cards can play their assigned positions in Ultimate Team, or that your Career Mode players have attributes suited to their tactical jobs.
Do not apply later FC terminology to FC 24
EA’s current franchise-level PlayStyles explainer describes the broader idea of PlayStyles and formation fit, but it does not establish a competitive ranking for FC 24. Keep advice specific to FC 24 rather than importing later-game FC IQ terminology.
