EA says Project Rene is a social, collaborative, mobile-first Sims experience—not the successor to The Sims 4. The company also says it plans future single-player Sims experiences for PC and console, but its January 9, 2026 update did not announce a title, features, or release date for one. The Sims 4 will continue receiving content and improvements.
What Project Rene is now
In an update published January 9, 2026, EA’s The Sims team described Project Rene as “a social, collaborative, mobile-first life-sim game.” EA says its emphasis is on friends sharing creativity and playing together. The project is distinct from the future deep single-player life simulation EA says it intends to make.

EA also stated: “It is not the successor to The Sims 4 and is a separate experience from any future deep, single player life simulation experience.” That makes Rene a separate Sims project, not a replacement for The Sims 4 or the announced identity of a numbered sequel. How Rene differs from EA’s single-player plans
| Project or plan | Play style | Platform information | Relationship to The Sims 4 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Project Rene | Social, collaborative, mobile-first life simulation | Mobile-first; EA’s update does not specify a complete platform list | EA says it is not The Sims 4’s successor |
| Future single-player Sims experience | Deep single-player life simulation | EA says single-player experiences on PC and console will remain part of its future | EA describes it as separate from Rene; it has not announced a title or said it is The Sims 4’s successor |
EA says it is building a family of Sims experiences across PC, console, and mobile, with each having its own focus and way to play. The January update says more than half of EA’s global development team is dedicated to The Sims 4 and “the next evolution” of single-player experiences. EA did not give a headcount or a more detailed breakdown, so that figure does not establish the size or timing of any specific project.
#1 Best Overall
- Requires The Sims 4 & all game updates. For PC, see minimum system requirements for the pack.
- Develop Parenting Skills – Level up your Sim’s parenting skills to satisfy their child’s needs and influence their behaviors. Gain new abilities through experience and choosing when to discipline bad actions, encourage good behavior, or just let kids be kids.
- Shape Your Sim’s Childhood – The decisions you make influence how your Sim parents and leave a lasting impact on their child’s future. Each choice shapes their personality, affects their traits, influences their family relationships, and guides their path into adulthood.
- Gather your Sim’s family to participate in new activities and spend quality time with each other. Sims of all ages can work together to complete a variety of school projects, express their creativity using construction blocks, or volunteer their time for good.
- Customize your Sims’ looks and their home with new family fashion and build items. Give the kids’ bedrooms extra personality, remodel the kitchen to feel homier, and let your Sims express their sporty or artistic sides with new outfits.
Is Project Rene The Sims 5?
EA’s update does not announce a game officially titled The Sims 5. It does explicitly say that Project Rene is not The Sims 4’s successor. Calling Rene “not Sims 5” is therefore shorthand for its stated relationship to The Sims 4—not confirmation that EA has announced a different game under the name The Sims 5.
Why earlier descriptions called Rene the next generation
When EA introduced Project Rene in October 2022, its Summit FAQ called it “the next generation of The Sims” and said the project was at a very early stage. EA discussed customization, Sim behavior, and playing solo or with others across supported devices. Those comments described the project at that time, not a final feature list.

- Requires The Sims 4 & all game updates. For PC, see minimum system requirements for the pack.
- Create Vampires
- Unleash Supernatural Powers
- Escape to Forgotten Hollow
- Live the Immortal Life
EA’s January 2026 update provides the newer framing: Rene has evolved toward a mobile-first social experience, separate from the future deep single-player game. The earlier “next generation” description should not be read as proof that Rene will replace The Sims 4. See EA’s 2022 Sims Summit FAQ.
What EA has said about The Sims 4
EA says it will keep delivering content and updates for The Sims 4 and remains committed to improving the experience. Its announcement presents that ongoing support alongside its plans for other Sims experiences, rather than as something Rene will take over.

What is still unknown about the next single-player Sims game
EA’s January 2026 update does not name the future single-player experience, confirm that it will be called The Sims 5, describe its features, or give a release date. EA said more news was coming in the coming months and that playtesting would continue during 2026; neither statement is a launch window.
EA also said players might encounter limited market tests and Sims Labs prototypes during 2026, including experimental features, concept imagery, and working names such as The Sims Labs: Life Together and The Sims Labs: Town Stories. Those are tests and prototypes, not confirmation of finalized products, titles, or launch plans.
