Choose the faction whose history you want Rook to carry into the story; use its reported combat bonuses as a tiebreaker. There is no established universal best: each faction shapes Rook’s background and conversation options, while the available sources do not quantify which one provides the most unique dialogue or quests.
What your faction choice changes
Faction is a background and roleplay choice with gameplay consequences. EA says it influences Rook’s backstory and conversation options, and may affect the balance of power; BioWare says it unlocks different narrative, dialogue, and gameplay interactions. Neither source ranks factions by the amount of unique story content.
Faction does not determine class. You choose separately among Warrior, Mage, and Rogue, as BioWare explains in its character-creator overview.
Compare all six factions
The identities below come from EA’s faction overview. Gameplay traits are reported by the secondary guide Game8, not listed in EA’s overview; treat them as useful nudges rather than a definitive balance ranking.

Choose by the kind of Rook you want to play
- For story identity: Choose the faction whose history and place in Thedas interest you most. EA and BioWare confirm that faction affects background and interactions, but the sources do not establish a faction with the most unique dialogue, quests, or story reactivity.
- For a combat tiebreaker: Consider Grey Wardens for defense, Veil Jumpers for critical and weakpoint damage, Shadow Dragons for resource generation, Lords of Fortune for takedowns, Mourn Watch for afflictions, or Antivan Crows for an extra potion. These are secondary-source trait reports, not an official balance verdict.
- For class and combat role: Pick Warrior, Mage, or Rogue separately. Your faction is not a substitute for class selection.
Keep doing faction and companion quests
Faction selection happens during character creation, but its importance does not end there. EA’s October 31, 2024 launch guide recommends completing side content and companion quests because they can directly affect how later stages unfold. That supports continuing to explore and engage with these stories; it does not establish that one starting faction is better for reaching a particular outcome.
