Dragon Age: The Veilguard lets you choose Rook’s pronouns separately from gender and appearance, then explicitly identify Rook as trans or non-binary through an early-game dialogue choice. That layered approach is unusually direct—but the available evidence does not establish it as the first game ever to offer trans-inclusive character creation.
How Rook’s character creation works
BioWare describes character creation as the place to choose Rook’s class, lineage, gender, appearance, and other details. Faction is another consequential choice: it affects narrative, dialogue, and gameplay interactions. BioWare’s overview of the character creator outlines those starting choices.
In a hands-on preview, Game Informer reported that pronouns are selected separately from gender, with she/her, he/him, and they/them options. The creator also offers multiple body types and visual choices such as tattoos and scars.
How to make Rook trans or non-binary
Pronouns and appearance do not, by themselves, set Rook’s gender identity. Instead, an early-game conversation at a hand mirror offers dialogue choices that can establish Rook as trans or non-binary. PC Gamer’s hands-on report describes this distinction after 41 hours with the game.

- Dragon age the veilguard action rpg: Immersive action role-playing game where you become the leader others believe in as Rook
- Save a battered world: Explore Thedas, a vibrant realm of rugged wilderness, treacherous labyrinths and glittering cities teetering on the edge as corrupt gods unleash havoc
- Unite the veilguard: Recruit a team of seven companions with rich backstories, including an assassin, a necromancer and a detective, each bringing unique abilities to the fight
- Customize your hero: Select from different races and combat classes, customize your appearance and choose your character's backstory as Dragon Age's newest hero
- International region free version: Region free PS5 disc plays on all systems, imported international packaging may differ in age rating and labeling, DLC may require correct region
That means you can choose pronouns, body type, and scars according to how you want Rook to look and be addressed, without those selections automatically declaring an identity. The explicit identity choice is opt-in dialogue, rather than an inference imposed by the creator.
What the “first” claim gets right—and what it doesn’t
The headline’s “first truly trans character creator” is best understood as a claim about The Veilguard’s particular combination: separate creator controls plus an explicit narrative choice to identify the player character as trans or non-binary. It should not be read as proof that no earlier game let players make trans characters or choose related visual options.

For example, Them reported in September 2024 that The Sims 4 had previously added optional top-surgery scars, and that other games had chest-scar customization. PC Gamer’s description of The Veilguard as a first “for this sort of thing” is a qualified assessment, not an exhaustive history of game character creators.
A useful comparison asks more than whether a game has an inclusive-looking avatar option:
- Can gender, pronouns, body, and presentation be chosen independently?
- Can players explicitly define a trans or non-binary identity, instead of having it inferred from appearance?
- Does identity have a place in optional dialogue or story?
- Is that identity choice opt-in?
The Veilguard supports those distinctions for Rook, but the available information does not systematically score earlier games across all four questions. A definitive first-ever ranking would go beyond what the cited accounts establish.

Yes. EA offers a standalone character creator at no cost, letting players make multiple versions of Rook without owning the full game. To transfer a character into The Veilguard, you must buy the game separately and use the same platform for the creator and the game. The free creator is a customization tool, not the full RPG. See EA’s character creator page for its details.
