For a major-story route through Dragon Age, begin with the prequel novels The Stolen Throne and The Calling, then follow the games from Origins through The Veilguard, placing each story DLC and tie-in around the game it relates to. The sequence below is a suggested in-world chronology, not an official, exhaustive BioWare timeline; books and other media add context but are optional.

What is the best chronological order to experience Dragon Age?

This order follows the chronology proposed in Freedom251’s guide, updated May 20, 2026. BioWare and EA list the major games, but the official catalog pages cited for this guide do not establish a single master chronology for every game, novel, comic, and DLC. Treat the later tie-in placements in particular as a useful reading route, not definitive dates.

The years use the setting’s Dragon Age calendar. The ancient-history material below is background revealed through lore and later stories, not a separate game or book that must be completed first.

Order Story Suggested placement
1 Dragon Age: The Stolen Throne Before the games; set during Ferelden’s rebellion against Orlais.
2 Dragon Age: The Calling Before Origins; follows King Maric, the Grey Wardens, and the Deep Roads.
3 Dragon Age: Origins and its early-campaign stories Begins in 9:30 Dragon during the Fifth Blight.
4 Dragon Age: Origins – Awakening, The Golems of Amgarrak, and Witch Hunt After the central conflict of Origins, in that broad sequence.
5 Dragon Age II and its story add-ons Roughly 9:30–9:37 Dragon, beginning during the Fifth Blight and continuing through Hawke’s years in Kirkwall.
6 Dragon Age: Asunder and The Masked Empire After Dragon Age II and before Inquisition.
7 Dragon Age: Inquisition and Jaws of Hakkon, The Descent Inquisition begins in 9:41 Dragon; the two expansions fit during its active period.
8 Dragon Age: Inquisition – Trespasser After the main campaign, about two years later in the guide’s account.
9 Knight Errant, Deception, Blue Wraith, Dark Fortress, and Tevinter Nights Grouped after Trespasser in the suggested route; their exact relative order and overlap are not firmly established.
10 Dragon Age: Absolution and The Missing Stories on the road toward The Veilguard; exact placement within this later group is not definitive.
11 Dragon Age: The Veilguard The latest major game in the franchise catalog cited here.

Why the ancient history is background, not a first stop

Stories about ancient elves, the Evanuris, Fen’Harel, the Veil, Tevinter, the Blights, and Andraste help explain the world’s history and conflicts. They emerge through lore, codices, and revelations across the series rather than one standalone entry with a required place in a watch-or-play order. Some accounts are religious traditions or a character’s interpretation, so they should not all be treated as uncontested historical fact.

Before Origins: Ferelden and the Grey Wardens

The Stolen Throne

This novel covers Ferelden’s rebellion against Orlais and offers background on Maric and Loghain. It precedes the games in the proposed chronology.

The Calling

Also set before Origins, this novel follows Maric, the Grey Wardens, and the Deep Roads. Read it after The Stolen Throne for the proposed order.

Dragon Age: Origins

The game opens in 9:30 Dragon as the Fifth Blight takes shape. Its six possible origin stories converge when Duncan recruits the player character into the Grey Wardens. You can start here without reading either prequel: the novels add context, but are not prerequisites for understanding the main games.

Where the Origins DLC fits

The recommended placements below distinguish a prequel, campaign additions, an alternate outcome, and postgame stories. Some campaign content does not have one uniquely correct mission-by-mission slot because the campaign branches and the player can choose when to pursue it.

Story content Suggested place Placement note
Leliana’s Song Before the main campaign A prequel story.
The Stone Prisoner During the campaign A campaign addition; its slot is flexible.
Warden’s Keep During the campaign A campaign addition; its slot is flexible.
Return to Ostagar During the campaign, after leaving Lothering The proposed guide places it after that point.
The Darkspawn Chronicles Outside the standard continuity An alternate outcome, not the next chapter of the main story.
Awakening After the main game The first of the broad postgame sequence.
The Golems of Amgarrak After Awakening Postgame story.
Witch Hunt After The Golems of Amgarrak Concludes the suggested sequence.

EA Help’s “How to download and buy DLC for classic EA games” page lists these Origins add-ons as well as Feastday Combo Pack 1, Feastday Combo Pack 2, Feastday Gifts, and Feastday Pranks. That support inventory verifies EA’s named content; it does not define narrative order or guarantee identical access on every platform.

Dragon Age II: Hawke’s years in Kirkwall

Dragon Age II begins during the same Fifth Blight era as Origins and spans roughly 9:30–9:37 Dragon in the proposed chronology. Its story follows Hawke from flight to life in Kirkwall.

Story add-ons during the game

The Exiled Prince, Legacy, and Mark of the Assassin take place during Hawke’s story. The guide suggests placing Legacy in Act 2 or Act 3, but that is approximate rather than a fixed canonical date. Dragon Age: Redemption, a live-action companion story, is positioned shortly before or around Mark of the Assassin; that placement is approximate too.

EA Help also lists The Black Emporium, Mage, Rogue, and Warrior item packs, and All Class Item Pack II for Dragon Age II. These are part of EA’s DLC inventory, but the list does not establish them as story chapters or supply an in-world slot for each.

When should I read Asunder and The Masked Empire?

Asunder

Read it after Dragon Age II and before Inquisition. It develops the mage-templar crisis and Cole’s story, providing context for conflicts and a character encountered in Inquisition.

The Masked Empire

Place it in the same interval. It provides background on Celene, Gaspard, Briala, and the Orlesian civil war, which informs the political situation in Inquisition. Both novels enrich the game’s context but are optional.

Inquisition, its expansions, and Trespasser

Dragon Age: Inquisition

The game begins in 9:41 Dragon in the proposed chronology. Play the main campaign before its epilogue expansion.

Jaws of Hakkon and The Descent

The guide places both expansions during the active Inquisition period and before Trespasser. They are additional adventures, not prerequisites for the epilogue.

Trespasser

Play this after the main campaign. The guide places it about two years later and describes it as an epilogue that sets up later developments. It is the most important optional stop for a player preparing to continue the story in The Veilguard.

After Trespasser: comics, Tevinter Nights, and the road to The Veilguard

The proposed sequence groups the comics Knight Errant, Deception, Blue Wraith, and Dark Fortress, along with the anthology Tevinter Nights, after Trespasser. It then places the animated series Absolution and the comic The Missing on the road to The Veilguard. The sources cited for this route do not establish a definitive ordering or precise overlap among these works, so regard them as a broad post-Inquisition reading and viewing group rather than a day-by-day timeline.

Do I need to read the books and comics to understand the games?

No. The main games are understandable without consuming every tie-in. The prequel novels add Ferelden and Grey Warden history; Asunder and The Masked Empire deepen the political and mage-templar context of Inquisition; later comics, novels, and the animated series offer more of the world but are not required to follow the core game sequence.

What should you experience before The Veilguard?

For the shortest preparation path supported by the guide, play Dragon Age: Inquisition and its Trespasser DLC. Tevinter Nights, The Missing, and Absolution are optional additional context. EA and BioWare’s official game catalogs list The Veilguard among the franchise’s main games, but do not prescribe an all-media prerequisite list.

Chronological order or release order?

Choose based on what you want from the series. Chronological order keeps the in-world events in sequence, while release/play order lets a returning fan encounter revelations in the order audiences originally received them. For a first-time player who mainly wants the game story, starting with Origins and adding books only when interested is a sensible route. For a returning fan who wants more continuity and background, the full suggested chronology is a useful guide. DLC can interrupt a campaign, so slot its optional missions where they suit your playthrough rather than treating every placement as mandatory.
