But the available evidence supports calling them unrealized narrative sketches—not confirming that BioWare cut a finished scene. The distinction matters: the images show a possibility explored during development, not necessarily content that was ever playable or fully produced.
What the Lucanis romance sketches depict
Former BioWare artist Nick Thornborrow’s portfolio includes images associated with Lucanis, among other story material. In a report published on November 15, 2024, Cooldown.pl described two images—a lake intimacy scene and a kiss in the rain—as romance scenes that did not make it into the final game. That is the outlet’s characterization of the artwork, rather than an official explanation from BioWare.
Thornborrow describes the work as “Narrative sketches produced for Dragon Age: The Veilguard.” He says he adapted writer Trick Weekes’ detailed outline into an illustrated, branching, visual-novel-style tool in Twine so the team could follow the story and give feedback. Narrative designers then used the sketches in an in-engine version. Thornborrow’s portfolio establishes their role as development story material; it does not individually label the lake image as a finalized scene.
Does the art prove BioWare scrapped a finished scene?
No. A narrative sketch can communicate a proposed story beat without showing that the beat reached a final script, animation, staging, or playable implementation. The sources available do not include a statement from Thornborrow or BioWare confirming that the lake scene was completed and then removed, or explaining why it is absent.

It is fair to say that reporting identified the intimate images as omitted romance material. It is more precise to describe them as unused or unrealized development art than as proof of a finished cutscene. The comparison is between what the sketches depict and what shipped—not between two confirmed versions of a completed scene.
How Lucanis’s released romance differs
Players can pursue Lucanis’s romance in the released game, but his route is tied to a major story choice and unfolds through specific dialogue and relationship beats. PC Gamer’s guide says players must save Treviso to romance him; it covers early flirtation, a near-kiss, a later commitment, and additional scenes. What the comparison tells us
- The portfolio provides primary evidence that the images belong to narrative sketch work developed from a story outline.
- Cooldown.pl reported that the lake intimacy and rainy kiss images were absent from the final game, but that report does not establish a specific production history or reason for their absence.
- The shipped romance has its own documented progression and Treviso requirement; the sketches alone cannot show how, when, or why the game’s final romance was shaped differently.
